Definition : Information Highway is defined as the Global Information and
Communication Network, which includes the Internet, Telephone Networks, Television
and Satellite Communication Networks.

The term ‘Knowledge Society’ refers to a society
where knowledge is the primary production resource.
A society where people use and share knowledge for their well-being can be called a
knowledge society.
Education is of huge importance in the knowledge society- because innovation and
development depend on the knowledge gained by education.

How is ICT related to Knowledge Society?
ICT is the enabler for both innovation and education.
With ICT knowledge and information can be shared all over the world.

The World Wide Web is the largest source of information for students as well as teachers.
One living in a village or rural areas can also access the latest information everyday.

Television broadcast is one of the best way to educate using video clips.
Example, the difficult experiments, advanced surgery for medical students can be viewed.

The information about text books, etc. is available on the internet.
(Similar to point 1-WWW)

Audio cassettes, video tapes, CDs, etc. are available in the market for
students of any standard.

LCD Projectors can be used for effective teaching for large number
of students.

Human mistakes in correction can be avoided by on-line examinations.

Ways in which educators will guide learners in ICT environment :
1. Learner - There is continuous progress in the field of Science and
Technology. New hardware and software are developed. Learner
must keep his knowledge up-to-date.
2. Planner - The maximum use and benefit of the computer is
possible when proper planning and execution of it are strictly
followed.
3. Teaching - Computer Aided Teaching (like TAT, Technology Aided
Teaching at MT), is important. Every student should use software
for effective learning.
4. Examiner - Examinations are a crucial part of education. Setting of
question papers, unit tests, preparation of question banks, etc.
can be done with the help of ICT.

Reading – because computer technology increases the rate of economic exchange.
People need jobs and the use of abstract models because of computerization offers plenty of them.
Computer studies includes mathematics and therefore has turned many people into the
mathematics community.
This includes expert thinking, the ability to solve and discuss problems that, unlike
algebra, lack explicit rule-based solutions.
Making effective use of collected information from sources available on the internet. E.g.
Using pictures on the internet in PowerPoint Presentations.
Learning e-based applications.

To avoid crowded classrooms, a school may adopt a dual-shift system without reducing the
student’s actual study time.

ICT can provide courses that small rural or urban cannot offer to their students because it is
difficult for those institutions to recruit and retain specialized teachers, particularly for
science and mathematics.

Schools that do not need a full-time Physics or English teacher can use radio, TV, or online
instruction, using already developed multimedia materials and sharing one “teacher” among
several schools.

Due to ICT an expert person who lives hundred of miles away can conduct the online courses.

Video conferencing changes the way Government is working. Bringing experts, decision
makers and citizens face to face who are spread across geographically. National Informatics
Centre is providing video-conferencing services for Government organizations.

Maharashtra State Centre Mumbai is well equipped for providing videoconferencing services
at International, National and at district level through NICNET (National Informative Centre

i. Define Information Communication
Technology.
Ans. Information and Communication Technology refers to different forms of technology
that allow us to transmit, store, create, process and share information by electronic
means.
This includes technologies such as radio, TV, Videos, Telephones, DVDs CDs, Computers, the
related software and hardware, Satellite systems and all associated technologies.
In brief, exchanging information using communication technologies is known as ICT.

ii. Define Information Highway.
Ans. Today the information Highway is the Internet. The Information Highway is defined as
the Global Information and Communication Network, which includes the Internet,
Telephone Networks, Television and Satellite Communication Networks.

iii. Define Knowledge Society.
Ans. Knowledge Society refers to a society where knowledge is the main resource instead
of Capital and Labour.
In former times Industrial Production used to be the main source of Economic activities.
With the rapid globalization this has changed and now Knowledge is the major source of
productivity. A knowledge society creates, shares, and uses knowledge for the prosperity
of its people.

Ans. Educators can improve literacy by performing various roles such as Learner, Planner,
Teachers and Examiners.
Planner: Proper planning and execution is necessary in order that the maximum benefit of
the latest technologies used in Information and Communication Technology is made

Teachers: Computer Aided Teaching is a very important part of Learning today. Using the
latest ICT tools and software allows students a practical way to gain knowledge.

i. Explain the scope of ICT.
Ans. Education is an ongoing process and is not confined to schools universities and other
traditional centres of education. ICT expands educational opportunities and promotes
educational changes in the following ways.
a) The WWW is a vast resource for knowledge for students and teachers. Anybody with
access to the internet can search for information on a variety of topics.
b) Open Universities, Distance Education and Online Education opportunities mean that
even those who are employed can still pursue studies at a place and time of their
convenience.
c) Television is a great tool for communicating knowledge to students by showing difficult
experiments, farmers by showing advanced agricultural techniques and also medical
professionals can benefit by showing advanced surgical procedures on Television.
d) Books, reference material and also tests can be made available on CDs, DVDs and other
digital media for use of students from KG to PG (Postgraduate) level.
e) Tests can be conducted Online thus reducing the need for trained examiners, invigilators,
moderators and also minimizes the possibility of human errors.

and development.
Ans. Knowledge Society refers to a society where knowledge is the main resource instead
of Capital and Labour.
Education is very important in a Knowledge Society.

Education thus stimulates development, economic growth and prosperity.

iii. What are challenging skill requirements?
Ans. Widespread computerization and Globalization have created new jobs for which new
skills need to be developed. As Knowledge societies grow, the work force needs to be
skilled in information and communication techniques. The skills that need to be developed
can be broadly classified as Basic Skills and Advanced skills.
The Basic Skills include knowing how to read and write clearly and also mathematical
ability. The use of computers involves the use of abstract models to carry out the job
efficiently.
The Advanced skills include expert thinking and the ability to solve problems which cannot
be solved using explicit rules based solutions.
Complex Communication skills involve social interactions and the ability to make effective
verbal and written arguments.

iv. Explain the transformative impact of ICT.
Ans. Using ICT, education can be made available to students at any place or time. This has
brought about a change in the traditional system of education.
a) With classrooms getting overcrowded, schools are adopting a shift system. This allows
children to spend some time in a traditional classroom and at other times may be required
to watch educational programs or complete online lessons.
b) ICT allows small rural or urban schools to offer courses that would usually require
specialized teachers. This is especially true in the case of Mathematics, Science or learning
of foreign languages.
c) The use of Radio, Television and other multimedia programs allows sharing of resources
between schools. All schools need not have full time teachers for all subjects.
d) ICT techniques allows retired or part-time teachers who are experts in their chosen fields
to teach online courses to students in distant areas.
