The Minoans established an advanced civilization on Crete, with a large palace complex at Knossos featuring an intricate labyrinth and legendary Minotaur. Their naval power and trade declined around 1400 BC as the Mycenaeans rose on mainland Greece. The Mycenaeans went to war with Troy and their story was later told by Homer in The Iliad, describing how the Greeks defeated Troy using a large hollow wooden horse. Both civilizations eventually declined, ushering in a Dark Age of wandering and loss of skills before the Greeks re-emerged and established independent city-states, adopting the name Hellenes.
