Why Should Art Teachers Teach Design Thinking?
Design thinking is a process for practical, creative
resolution of problems or issues based around the
building up of ideas. It is about the design of objects,
information, environments, and experiences. It is not
about the elements and principles of art and design.

Design thinking is the way we approach the
world when we imagine exciting new solutions
for the future.
IDEO’s Rules for Effective Brainstorming
Work collaboratively. The more brains, the better!
Defer judgment. There are no bad ideas at this point!
Encourage wild ideas. It’s the wild ideas that often inspire
the breakthrough insights!
Build on the ideas of Think “and” rather than “but.”

Stay focused on topic. You get better quality output if

  8. The d.school at Stanford in California offers a degree in design thinking. The d.school's first major venture in the world of K-12 education is at the Nueva School in Hillsborough, CA. Called the Innovation Lab, the project is a 3500 square foot space where students in the K-8 school will develop their design thinking skills.

IDEO Method Cards is a collection of 51 cards representing diverse ways that design teams can understand the people they are designing for. They are used to make a number of different methods accessible to all members of a design team, to explain how and when the methods are best used, and to demonstrate how they have been applied to real design projects. Inspired by playing cards, the cards are classified as four suits—Ask, Watch, Learn, Try—that define the types of activities involved in using each method.

Zolo toys was started by two designers, Byron Glaser and Sandra Higashi, who started a design firm, Higashi Glaser Design, after graduating from the Art Center College of Design in Pasadena, California, in 1987. Zolo toys were invented as a new free-form, gender-neutral construction niche in the toy market. “It is our goal to create imagery and products that are genuine in spirit, bold in attitude, becoming to the eye, and meaningful in truth.”

Although primarily concerned with the appearance of a vehicle, it is governed by various factors including security, safety and engineering - all of which have their own set of specialists. This means that as well as designing to very high standards, automotive designers must have excellent teamworking and communication skills, say Chris Clements and... With oil prices at $135 dollars per barrel, the pressure is on for car makers to innovate and create more fuel efficient vehicles. Volkswagen seems to be taking this task seriously with the 1L, a prototype that is capable of traveling for 235mpg using 1 gallon of gasoline, or 100km on 1L of gas. Adding to the excitement of this breakthrough is recent news that VW plans to get this concept out to market in 2010!
