Discuss the fragility of civilization against the destructive force of fear. If people become isolated
from civilization, then the beast inside of us can break the bonds from society and unleash the

and creating rules. With the boys, there is always a power struggle between Jack and Ralph from

The Conch shell is used to summon the boys at the beginning and impresses many of them
making them think of him as a natural leader. Seeing there is nothing left of the plane wreckage
the conch shell is one of the only things they have which is linked to society and therefore

The excessive hunting showed how the boys just killed for no apparent reason; this is not a
normal thing for an innocent boy to do. It seemed as if all jack wanted to do is hunt instead of
caring about protection and shelter. Humans were killed because the boys began to unravel the
true nature of humans. Simon died when Jack said "Kill the beast! Cut his throat! Spill His
Blood!" Simon is eventually stabbed with a spear and that causes his death. The boys devour
what they believe is the beast (Simon) and even if it was the beast, eating a beast doesn't sound
like what 'innocent boys' would do. Piggy's death of course was most certainly not an accident.
Rodger clearly knew what he was doing and he was throwing rocks just aiming to cause harm to
someone, the rock hit Piggy and he fell off Castle Rock and died.

non–existent, which means the boys are completely free. Even though the jungle itself was not
dangerous, the boys made it dangerous when they were given freedom. While the island gave the
boys freedom and food, the boys used the freedom in a dangerous way. Because of these dangers,
the island was not considered a paradise.
Jack Merridew reflects Hobbes' view on society. Hobbes predicted that humans would act with
selfish intentions when given freedom. While Jack was conditioned by society to behave well,
he bullied Piggy as soon as he got a taste of freedom. He often bullied Piggy because he wanted to
establish his dominance. Jack told Piggy to "Shut up", telling him that he was "talking too much"
(Golding 20). Jack did not care about anything Piggy had to say. Instead, Jack wanted the tribe to
listen to him. Even as they are forming their little society, Jack spoke out when he was not
supposed to. Almost immediately after Ralph announced the first rule, Jack broke it out of
excitement. Hobbes had predicted that people were naturally bad and would break rules when
given unless there was a severe punishment (Locke Hobbes Overview). Jack proved this to be true
when he spoke out with no fear of any remorse. These are some of the ways Jack displayed Hobbes'
philosophy about society.

Arguable Themes In Lord Of The Flies
Theme can be defined as the subject of a talk, piece of writing, a person's thoughts, or a
topic. Often, themes are found in novels or stories, fake or fiction, every work containing a
central idea that carries a novel and gives it reason to exist. One novel that exemplifies a
strong arguable theme is Lord of the Flies by William Golding. As described by E.L Epstein,
"The theme is an attempt to trace the defects of society back to the defects of human nature."
Because of this central focus, readers have the opportunity to see the societal flaws in Golding's
Lord of the Flies and trace them back to the flaws discerned in human nature.

For example, in Ralph exists the nature of humanity that strives for order and consensus. Ralph
embodies this in his belief of the conch, in the idea of being saved off the island, as well as
possessing the basic element that human impulses can be geared towards the general good. For
example, when Ralph says "If a ship comes near the island they may not notice us," (22) he is the
one who explores problem solving options such as whether there are other people on the island.
Piggy however, embodies the nature of humanity that uses rationalism to solve problems. Piggy's
glasses as being the source of fire is one such example of this. At the same time, Piggy echoes a
rational worldly approach by saying "Which is better–to have rules and agree, or to hunt and kill? ...
law and rescue, or hunting and breaking things up?" (67). Piggy's claim is that life is "scientific"
and faith in logic are elements that he believes are natural to the state of humanity. Golding asserts
that the nature of humanity contains a malevolent side to it. Characters like Jack and Roger

away, both characters reveal how the desire for power and a particular cruelty exist in the heart of

Lord of the Flies The main theme of Lord of the Flies is that moral nature is not instinctive in
mankind. There is a capacity for evil in all people, and their morality is superficial. Nonetheless, it
is this moral integrity that must continue in order for a person to be ethical, for society to be
maintained, and to keep society from falling in on itself. Society holds everyone together. Without
the rules and the structure, evil in everyone becomes more prominent, and ideals, values, and

His nickname parallels the wild pigs that are hunted on the island, and it also represents his
intelligence. Piggy portrays clear–sightedness and intelligence. He tries to keep peace and clings to
civilization, and he is the smartest boy on the island even though he has no social skills. He does
not like strenuous work so he refrains from physical work. His only contribution to survival on
the island are his specs which become very important in lighting the signal and cooking fires. The
two boys together find a conch shell which comes to represent democracy and order, and the high
hand of authority. Ralph blows it to bring together any other people that might be on the island.
Soon a crowd gathers. The boys are made up of bigguns and littluns, the bigguns being around
twelve years old, and the littluns being around five or six. Immediately the conch is seen as a
token of respect, so it is always used to call meetings. We are now introduced to the rest of the main
characters. Jack Merridew is the leader of the boy's choir. His name means "one who supplants"
reflecting his use of force, and it is derived from Hebrew. He will come to represent savagery,
anarchy, and anger. He is about the same age as Ralph. Simon is a bit younger than Jack and
Ralph, but he is still a biggun. He represents pure goodness, and he is seen as a "Christ" figure. He
