Phishing is a type of cybercrime where a target is contacted by email, telephone or text message by someone posing as a legitimate institution to lure individuals into providing sensitive data such as personally identifiable information, banking and credit card details, and passwords. Phishing is commonly carried out by sending fraudulent emails purporting to be from popular social media sites, auction sites, online payment processors or IT administrators. The emails direct users to enter details at a fake website which resembles the legitimate one.
