- Parent of 2 kids, educator for 13 years – HS and elem school. Technology in HS – word processing and video games – only social with the people in front of us.. Social media is now part of what we do.Be careful of generational stereotypes
- Avoid the “kids these days” – if many of us were faced with the same options, we would make many of the same choices.
- Key message – BE INVOLVED. Be careful dropping your child off at a place you have never been and have no idea who is going to be there.IF we don’t teach and model, who will?Peer orientation and peer guidance – Gordon Neufeld “Hold On To Your Kids”

- Photo from earlier This year at Kent. At home, I have replaced our toilets and updated our fluorescent lighting system using YouTube. Doesn’t have to be YouTube but there are many tools that help us to connect, learn and grow with others.
- Are we modeling and teaching balance? When do we use “accidental parenting” (it works!... Short term)
- Screen time, balance, when it is ok to be online, what is too much. Is it enhancing or taking away from our lives? Be in the moment when the moments are happening. Try not to always see the world through a lens or a screen.GAMING addictions, connected addictions.
- What you post can and will be shared… what would happen if someone googled you? We need to be aware of what we share (comments, likes, posts). Think before we click.
- The internet doesn’t forget.
- A new stress: The strive and competition for likesPopularity, followersWHO are our kids’ friends? Have the ever met them? How much do they trust them?
- Only post what your mother, father, grandmother, teacher, coach, boss would be ok with seeing.
- Can we really be private when we post online? We lose control as soon as we post. Others share, capture and share.We can work to make things less public… but not private. Passwords: NEVER Share.
- Bullying – hurtful abuse of power over time. Sticks and stones? Yeah right. Kids cannot escape.
- Cannot escape, less empathy, anonymous and cowardly. Nonstop.
- If someone is disrespectful Screenshot can help… but it can also hurt. Private messages posted online. Make sure you and your child know how to do this
