What have you learned from your audience feedback?
I created a feedback survey to get
opinions on my documentary
advert, so I could use the
feedback to help me in the last
draft of the documentary advert.
I used open and closed questions
so I could gain qualitative and
quantitative data, allowing me to
see the basics of their opinions
but then also see why they think
that.

I showed a few people
my documentary, the
comments made my
the audience were
positive. E.g. ‘that
funny’ ‘its great’.

I used this website
http://live.surveyshack.com/blog/bid/46918/DesigningYour-Customer-Satisfaction-Survey-Some-Tips to give me
advice on a customer satisfaction survey and also drew
upon my sociological knowledge of research methods. The
website gave me the steps to consider when creating this
particular type of survey. It gave me the knowledge of
what type of questions to include ‘it’s probably more
beneficial for you to ask questions that collect
information that will actually show you what actions you
need to take to improve things in your organisation.’ The
aim if the survey was to see where needed improvement
in the opinion of my target audience, so his advice helped
me to create a survey that is beneficial to me.

My findings from the survey were mostly wideranging however there are some similarities in the
answers. The breakdowns of the findings are in
the previous post. The 7/9 of my respondents
liked the advert, and 7/9 respondents wanted to
watch the documentary. The most common
favourite element was Jamie’s face and
expression plus the unhealthy food around him,
however my target audience did not like the
apple, the healthy food and part of the title –
Jamie Oliver:

I used a purposive sample, because my
target population had to be my target
audience. I gave the survey to youths in
the school the documentary was filmed
in, a teacher and nuclear family members.
My sample is representative of my target
audience. The sample had to be based on
my target audience because my advert is
targeted at them, it is important that the
advert appeals to them because if it
doesn’t they may not watch the
documentary.

One of the survey replies surprised and shocked me. It was very indepth details as to why the respondent didn’t like it, and gave much
detail on how I should have my advert. I found some of the answers
on this particular survey helpful, however some answers were just
too far-fetched. However I will take this answer into account when
creating my final draft.
In response to the feedback from my target audience, I will take out
the apple and healthy food in the advert and rearrange the
unhealthy food. I will make text bigger and easier to read for the
audience. I will also change how the title appears on the advert.
• Do you like the advert?
Yes /////// – 7
No // – 2
• What’s your opinion of the tagline?
It’s okay
It’s funny because I don’t like him
Tells me what to expect
Needs to be more catchy, but tells you what it’s about
I do not understand what its implying? Is it making
reference to his size?
I think it gives you an idea as to what the documentary is
about
It’s really good, but makes it seem like a comedy
programme
Straight to the point
Simple, intriguing, straight to the point

• What would you do to improve it?
Put Jamie by the side
Add the word school food to the tagline
Get rid of the apple. Change the composition,
more the background stripes to the left,
make a clearer decision on what food I want, get
rid of Jamie Oliver writing,
make the writing larger, create a mountain of food
and have Jamie falling off it.
Maybe add some more pictures to the
background
Remove some of the food
Add more colour to make it stand out
Remove the apple, use a different font for the
tagline
• Does it make you want to watch it?
Yes /////// -7
No // -2

• Does it provide you with enough information on the
documentary?

His face
Jamie’s expression
The food around him looks colourful and effective

I will explain at length
Why are there tomatoes and watermelons on top of
Jamie’s head?
‘Seemingly empty moments have a strange secret beauty’
John Grierson once described documentaries as ‘the creative treatment of actuality’. My interpretation of Grierson’s quote is that the real purpose
behind a good documentary should be portraying the truth and reality. From this quote I can infer that if ‘real life’ is not portrayed in a documentary
then the soul purpose of a documentary has not been accomplished. ‘Creative treatment’ refers to the way reality is portrayed, in a way that is
‘thinking-outside-the-box’. Using specific ways to target your audience and portray this ‘truth’ that would appeal to the people watching. I think the
quote ‘the creative treatment of actuality’ links to my documentary because the argument I am portraying is something that relates to my target
audience’s reality. In my documentary I have used interviews, these increase the validity of the argument. It furthers the ‘actuality’ of the
documentary. The interviews with the Head Cooks are an example of this, they uncover what it was like when Jamie Oliver’s ‘Feed Me Better’
campaign was in place and how they have been left to ‘pick up the pieces’. Their dialogue portrays their ‘real life’ experience, because this is a first
hand account it acts as evidence of this ‘actuality’ and furthers the argument. I have also included unique clips to entice my audience, I have thought
hard about how I would creatively attract my audience and keep them entertained. For example; I have used a taster session, because I think it will
appeal to my target audience and further my message.
‘Everybody who makes a film is putting their own truth on the screen’, this is a quote from Diana Tammes. I think that the Diana Tammes quote links
to my documentary Jamie Oliver; the naked truth because I have a clear argument and my own experiences that have shaped my argument it is clear
throughout the documentary that I am arguing a particular view. As it is a expository documentary an argument is expected whether it is clear or not,
my argument isn’t hidden because I wanted to make it clear from the start that the documentary came from a particular angle. I have my own
experiences of Jamie Oliver’s ‘Feed Me Better’ campaign because it occurred when I was in secondary school, which makes me a first hand victim of
the campaign.
In an Introduction to Documentary (p.168) Bill Nichols said (describing the expository mode) ‘images serve a supporting role. They illustrate,
illuminate, evoke or act in counterpoint to what is said.’ This quote links to Jamie Oliver: the naked truth because alongside my narration I have
included archive footage and original footage to enforce my argument. I have used specific footage so it will further my argument clearly. I have also
used photographs to also act as an anchor for my narration but also to give the audience a little background information/profile to help them
understand who Jamie Oliver is and what he has achieved. I have used photographs to show my opinion and mock Jamie Oliver which also furthers my
argument. I have only captured images that relate to the subject of the film and portray the ‘truth’ behind my argument.

‘Seemingly empty moments have a strange secret beauty. Sometimes images themselves develop their own life, their own mysterious stardom.’ This
quote is from Grizzly Man by Werner Herzog. I think this quote from Grizzly Man links to my documentary because in Jamie Oliver: the naked truth I
have used images that are shown in archive footage of Jamie Oliver crying, these hint my argument to the audience in a humorous way, allowing them
to realise the indication I have entwined into the image, but also keeping them entertained. I have added photographs of Jamie Oliver portrayed in a
way that would be seen to be mocking him. These have a simple subtle way of furthering my argument. Even though I am using a simple way to push
my argument they still own their own ‘stardom’ when enforcing it.
Overall, I think Jamie Oliver: the
Naked Truth was successful. My
audience enjoyed it and it
already has many views on
YouTube. My argument was put
across successfully and I was
able to interweave humour into
the documentary. There are
many things I would like to have
included if I had more time and
better equipment: for example
the Taster Session. But I am
happy with the outcome. I feel
that I have achieved what I set
out to do – I have created an
expository documentary that my
target audience enjoys.

As it is a expository documentary an argument is expected whether it is clear or not, my argument isn’t hidden because I wanted to make it clear from the start that the documentary came from a particular angle. I have my own experiences of Jamie Oliver’s ‘Feed Me Better’ campaign because it occurred when I was in secondary school, which makes me a first hand victim of the campaign. In an Introduction to Documentary (p.168) Bill Nichols said (describing the expository mode) ‘images serve a supporting role. They illustrate, illuminate, evoke or act in counterpoint to what is said.’ This quote links to Jamie Oliver: the naked truth because alongside my narration I have included archive footage and original footage to enforce my argument. I have used specific footage so it will further my argument clearly. I have also used photographs to also act as an anchor for my narration but also to give the audience a little background information/profile to help them understand who Jamie Oliver is and what he has achieved. I have used photographs to show my opinion and mock Jamie Oliver which also furthers my argument. I have only captured images that relate to the subject of the film and portray the ‘truth’ behind my argument. ‘Seemingly empty moments have a strange secret beauty. Sometimes images themselves develop their own life, their own mysterious stardom.’ This quote is from Grizzly Man by Werner Herzog. I think this quote from Grizzly Man links to my documentary because in Jamie Oliver: the naked truth I have used images that are shown in archive footage of Jamie Oliver crying, these hint my argument to the audience in a humorous way, allowing them to realise the indication I have entwined into the image, but also keeping them entertained. I have added photographs of Jamie Oliver portrayed in a way that would be seen to be mocking him. These have a simple subtle way of furthering my argument. Even though I am using a simple way to push my argument they still own their own ‘stardom’ when enforcing it.
  • 5. Overall, I think Jamie Oliver: the Naked Truth was successful. My audience enjoyed it and it already has many views on YouTube. My argument was put across successfully and I was able to interweave humour into the documentary. There are many things I would like to have included if I had more time and better equipment: for example the Taster Session. But I am happy with the outcome. I feel that I have achieved what I set out to do – I have created an expository documentary that my target audience enjoys.
