Michigan State University has 25 varsity sports teams that participate in the NCAA's Division I-A and Big Ten Conference, with the exception of ice hockey. MSU athletics brings in around $69 million per year through ticket and merchandise sales, with football alone bringing in over $44 million in 2010. Social media platforms like Twitter, Facebook, and Google+ are used to promote MSU athletics and engage with fans. The success of MSU athletics is evaluated based on booster and student section sizes, revenue targets being met, and an overall annual revenue increase of at least $2 million year-over-year.
