2. •"Philosophically, does the constant
supply of information steal our
ability to imagine or replace our
dreams of achieving? After all, if it
is being done somewhere by
someone, and we can participate
virtually, then why bother leaving
the house?"

4. Ben Saunders
Arctic explorer
In 2004, Ben Saunders became
the youngest person ever to ski
solo to the North Pole. In 2013, he
set out on another record-breaking
expedition, this time to
retrace Captain Scott’s ill-fated
journey to the South Pole on
foot.

6. •"The first question which you will ask and
which I must try to answer is this: What is
the use of climbing Mt. Everest? And my
answer must at once be, it is no use.
There is not the slightest prospect of any
gain whatsoever. There is not the
slightest prospect of any gain
whatsoever.
7. •Oh, we may learn a little about the behavior of
the human body at high altitudes, and possibly
medical men may turn our observation to
some account for the purposes of aviation, but
otherwise nothing will come of it. We shall not
bring back a single bit of gold or silver, and not
a gem, nor any coal or iron. We shall not find a
single foot of earth that can be planted with
crops to raise food. So it is no use.
8. • If you cannot understand that there is
something in man which responds to the
challenge of this mountain and goes out
to meet it, that the struggle is the
struggle of life itself upward and forever
upward, then you won't see why we go.
9. •What we get from this adventure is
just sheer joy, and joy, after all, is the
end of life. We don't live to eat and
make money. We eat and make
money to be able to enjoy life. That is
what life means, and that is what life
is for."

11. How can travel make you a better person?
• Plan
• Itinerary
• Bargaining
• Booking
• Time management
• Communication
• Calculation
• Confidence
• Gain knowledge in History, Geography, Culture, Customs …
12. • “The whole object of travel is not
to set foot on foreign land: it is at
last to set foot on one’s own
country as a foreign land.” - G.K.
Chesterton
“For my part, I travel not to go anywhere, but to go. I travel for
travel’s sake. The great affair is to move.” - Robert Louis
Stevenson
“Man’s real home is not a house, but the Road, and that life itself is
a journey to be walked on foot.” ― Bruce Chatwin
13. Popular reasons:
1. Provides learning and education about places and history
2. Connects us to other cultures and people
3. Slows us down: Gives us a break from our fast-paced lives
4. Gives us time to heal, reduces stress and helps us regain
enthusiasm for life
5. Helps us break habits: mentally, physically, and emotionally
6. Stokes curiosity and awakens our inner child by offering us
new, “first-time” experiences
7. Invites the opportunity to get lost and face one’s fears of the
unknown

rediscovered
14. • “The wish to travel seems to me characteristically
human: the desire to move, to satisfy your curiosity
or ease your fears, to change the circumstances of
your life, to be a stranger, to make a friend, to
experience an exotic landscape, to risk the
unknown..” ― Paul Theroux
“We travel, initially, to
lose ourselves; and we
travel, next, to find
ourselves. – Pico Iyer
15. Why do we hate travel?
• 1. Customs
• 3. Transportation
• 4. Leaving out of a suitcase
• 5. Travel is for animals
• 6. Finding flats
• 7. Internet Access
• 8. Lack of routine
• 9. Pollution
• 10. Cleanliness
• 11. Lack of a Decent Kitchen
• 13. Weasels (Getting ripped off)
• 14. Lack of time
16. •And our lives today are safer and more
comfortable than they have ever been. There
certainly isn't much call for explorers
nowadays. My career advisor at school never
mentioned it as an option. If I wanted to know,
for example, how many stars were in the Milky
Way, how old those giant heads on Easter
Island were, most of you could find that out
right now without even standing up.
17. •And yet, if I've learned anything in nearly
12 years now of dragging heavy things
around cold places, it is that true, real
inspiration and growth only comes from
adversity and from challenge, from
stepping away from what's comfortable
and familiar and stepping out into the
unknown.
18. •In life, we all have tempests to ride and
poles to walk to, and I think
metaphorically speaking, at least, we
could all benefit from getting outside the
house a little more often, if only we could
summon up the courage. I certainly
would implore you to open the door just
a little bit and take a look at what's
outside.
