The document discusses different types of radio news based on the target audience and purpose of the radio station. It covers gay radio, public service radio like the BBC which aims to inform and educate, commercial radio which airs advertisements, community radio which serves a local hospital, small-scale college radio, local town radio, regional radio covering a wider area, national radio informing about the whole country, and internet/satellite/cable radio which uses different broadcasting methods.
1. Types of Radio News
News related to its audience:
Gaydio radio station has a predominant target audience of people that are
homosexual and bisexual. Due to this, it adapts its style of news and events to this
particular sexual orientation to ensure they know it’s appealing and enduring for their
target audience. I listened to the Chris and Emma at Breakfast Show which airs
between 7-10am and within their news broadcast, they discuss upcoming events, the
main one being a homosexual dating campaign on Valentine’s Day this year as well
as everyday normal news events relating to what’s currently happening in the world
such as ‘The Paris attackers behead captives’ headline; this is news that could
impact on their life just as much as a heterosexual person’s life. Once a week the
radio station release the latest news in relation to gay issues which counts as news
related to its audience. I would say the content of Gaydio’s news broadcasts aims to
entertain more than educate.

Public service radio:
A public service radio such as the BBC is liable to inform, educate and entertain its
target audience. When listening to broadcasts such as BBC 5 Live’s show ‘5 live
daily’ at 10am you will notice there are no adverts, this is due to the public and the
taxes they pay. The BBC have a strict scheduling for all of its shows on BBC radio 5,
all targeted at middle to upper middle class people that will have a common interest
to know what’s currently happening in the world.

2. Commercial radio:
Commercial radio stations feature advertisements in their broadcasts to make money
for funding the shows. An example of a popular commercial radio station within
Manchester would be Key 103 as in between the chart songs and latest news
updates you hear product/brand advertisements. Key 103 also air multiple
competitions where any members of the audience can enter to win money or prizes
which helps to expand their target audience. Most of the news broadcasted on Key
103 Manchester is local so the audience are aware of what may be happening within
their home town rather than it all being based on what’s happening around the world.
The traffic and weather updates for Manchester are all frequent on the show as the
audience are updated every hour. This type of radio station is more entertaining as
appose to educating.

Community radio:
Community radio stations are relatively informal and air broadcasts within a short
range that a relevant to people within a specific place or area. An example of a
community radio is Northern Air Hospital radio station that broadcasts to only
Manchester General and Salford Royal Hospital because it only includes bulletins
about the events within the two hospitals or just outside it around the local areas.
The Northern Air has been running for 55 years and airs daily to provide these two
separate communities with entertainment such as how much money the hospital has
raised at a particular event or what special donations they’ve received as well as if
any patients go missing, they broadcast it to ensure that people are aware and will
keep their eyes open within his community.

3. Small-scale radio:
A small scale radio station is one that only provides information and news across a
certain range with an area. For example, E6 radio based in Eccles College has a
radio station which plays all types of music and advertisements but also provides the
target audience of students and teachers on news related to its area which could be
about an up and coming awards evening that’s taking place or an art show being
held on lunchtime for people to go and enjoy, however it’s only broadcast around the
college and no further. Due to the target audience of this radio station, they aim to
educate and inform as well as entertain.
Local radio:
Local radio stations usually provide news that is unique to their specific town or
village. Salford City Radio which is only broadcast within the Salford area tells its
target audience of the local public what’s being happening in their home town. News
events currently include information on the local floods within the area, information
on the local football teams (Salford FC) next big match and the ‘helping handbags’
campaign which involves filling handbags full of goodies and taking it to homeless
people within Salford to comfort them this winter.

4. Regional radio:
Regional radio stations are the next step up from a local radio station. Instead of just
broadcasting to the town, you broadcast the current news and events to the entire
region which could be the North West of England for example. Heart North West
radio are a regional radio station that share news related to the North West of
England such as hospitals in the North West encouraging new mums to breastfeed
their children, missing teenagers in the area and campaigns to find them and
information on the storm that is heading towards the North West which is expected to
be the worst in many years. This type of radio station is more informal as appose to
BBC radio although it is still educational.
National radio:
A national radio station is one educates and informs its target audience on
information from news and events happening all over the country, in specific,
England. BBC Radio 1 provide its working class audience with information from all
over the UK, the current headlines consist of; ‘how the UK can learn from
Melbourne’s Music scene’, ‘One Direction’s Zayn says he never wanted to be part of
the band’ and ‘The Madness of Manchester City’. Each of these news items are
current and relevant to its audience despite the fact not everyone will find these
particular headlines interesting. BBC news is usually formal as it aims to inform,
educate and entertain its audience.
5. Internet/satellite/cable radio:
Internet radio is an audio service transmitted via the Internet. Broadcasting on the
Internet is usually referred to as webcasting since it is not transmitted broadly
through wireless means. Satellite radio is a broadcasting network in which digital
high-fidelity (hi-fi) audio entertainment is transmitted from orbiting satellites to
receivers on the surface. The satellite's signals are broadcast nationwide, across a
much wider geographical area than terrestrial radio stations, and the service is
primarily intended for the occupants of motor vehicles. Cable radio is a concept
similar to that of cable television; it brings radio signals into homes and businesses
via the use of coaxial cables. An example of this type of radio is Absolute Radio
because unlike digital radio’s such as E6 Radio, it has limited times it can be
broadcast.
