1. ASSESSING CARTOONS
• Assess the CONTENT (SSTIC Method):
• S – Size: Is anything over/under sized? If so, why?
• S – Symbols: Look for people, objects, or symbols you should recognize
• T – Text: Read everything! Labelled items become metaphors.
• I – Imagery: Is the cartoonist trying to create a certain mood?
• C – Colour: Is colour used? Are the colours representative of anything?
• Assess the MEANING:
• What is the point / message of this cartoon?
• What is the current event? Why is it significant?
