WOULD RATHER
QUOTES AND ANECDOTES:

PEOPLE; AS I GROW OLDER, I ADMIRE KIND PEOPLE.” ~
ABRAHAM JOSHUA HESCHEL
“CONSTANT KINDNESS CAN ACCOMPLISH MUCH. AS THE

MISUNDERSTANDING, MISTRUST, AND HOSTILITY TO

FOUNDATION WITH THE BRICKS THAT OTHERS THROW AT
HIM OR HER.” ~ DAVID BRINKLEY

HAD BETTER (‘d better) / WOULD RATHER (‘d rather)
HAD BETTER / ‘D BETTER (+ (NOT) INFINITIVE)
I'd better go ------> "Mejor me marcho." o "Debería
marcharme."
Regla: Observación importante: Al hablar no se suele
decir “had”, sino que se contrae, igual que would “I'd,
you'd,
he'd....” por eso parece “I would better.”
“have better
Ejemplo 1: You'd better come--Va a ser mejor que vengas.
Ejemplo 2: Hadn't you better write to them? ¿No sería
mejor que les escribieses?
Ejemplo 3: You'd better do what I told you. Más vale que
hagas lo que te dije.
Ejemplo 4. . She'd better leave now.
Ejemplo 5: You'd better study. If you don't you'll have to work. “Es mejor
que (deberías) estudies. Si no lo haces tendrás que
trabajar”.
Ejemplo 6: He'd better do it or I'll be very angry. Más vale que lo haga o
me enfadaré. También es una orden o amenaza.
Ejemplo 7: I'd better hurry up.
hago a mi mismo.
ing
WOULD RATHER / ‘D RATHER (+ (NOT)
INFINITIVE)
Ejemplo 1: I would prefer to go out. Preferiría salir.
Ejemplo 2: I'd rather stay here. Yo preferiría
quedarme.
Ejemplo 3: She'd prefer dancing. Ella preferiría
bailar.
Ejemplo 4: Would you rather sleep or stay awake?
¿Preferirías dormir o permanecer despierto?
IMPORTANTE: Diferencia entre "would prefer" y “would
sin “to”.
Ejemplo 1 : I'd rather you spoke in English. Preferiría que
hablases (o hablaras) en inglés.
Ejemplo 2: My brother would rather we didn't go home. Mi
hermano preferiría que no fuésemos (o fuéramos) a casa.
