Something about World Diabetes Day…………….
 Introduced by International Diabetes Federation(IDF) and
WHO in 1991 in response to concern over the escalating
incidence of diabetes around the world .

World Diabetes Day is different every year, because each
year a theme is decided upon to help those most in need.
 2004: Diabetes and Obesity
 2005: Diabetes and Foot Care
2006: Diabetes in the Disadvantaged and the Vulnerable
2007-2008: Diabetes in Children and Adolescents
World Diabetes Day 2102 theme:
           • Every year one theme is chosen to spread
the message about diabetic’s disease. The
theme for world diabetes day for the years
             2009-2013 is “Diabetics, education and
             prevention.”
 Encourage government to implement and strengthen
policies for the prevention and control of diabetes and its
  complications.
 Illustrate the importance of evidence-based education in
the prevention and management of diabetes and its
  complications.
 Raise awareness of the warning signs of diabetes and
promote action to encourage early diagnosis.
 Raise awareness of and promote action to reduce the
main modifiable risk factors for type 2 diabetes.
 Raise awareness and promote action to prevent or delay
  the complication of diabetes.
Campaign Objectives
         • The objectives for the 2009-2013 campaign
were informed by the work of the Federation’s
Consultative Section on Education and its
Task Force on Epidemiology and Prevention.
         • The objectives were further informed by
           the World Health Organization’s 2008-2013
Action Plan for the Global Strategy for the
         • Prevention and Control of Non-
           communicable Diseases.
• The World Diabetes Day 2012 campaign
will link the urgent need for action to the
protection of the health of our future
  generations.
• Particular focus will be placed on
highlighting the importance of education -
  for health professionals, people with
diabetes and people at risk – in reducing
the impact of diabetes throughout the
  world.
• The campaign aims to EDUCATE,
ENGAGE and EMPOWER youth and the
  general public on diabetes.

• The slogan chosen for the campaign is:
  DIABETES: PROTECT OUR FUTURE
The 2012 campaign
            • special focus
               – on children and young people as the driving
force for the promotion and dissemination of
                 education and prevention messages
            • will inspire and engage local communities
to recognise the importance of early
awareness of the risks and dangers of
              diabetes.
The 2012 campaign
            • The aim
              – is to build awareness among children
and young people of the warning signs
              – and risk factors for diabetes and
              – that in many cases type 2 diabetes can
                be prevented through healthy eating
                and physical activity.
The 2012 campaign

The three key messages of the campaign
              are:
            • Access to essential education for
              everyone
            • The way we live is putting our health at
              risk
            • People with diabetes face stigma and
              discrimination
