Critical thinking involves distinguishing facts from opinions and evaluating information sources. A librarian's role is to teach people how to critically evaluate information resources through active learning techniques. One such technique involves having learners research answers to self-generated questions on a topic of interest using only an online periodical database. This allows learners to define an information need, become aware of different information resources, and distinguish databases from each other. Learners then compile a bibliography and reflect on which databases provided useful information.
