Data instruction
◦ Finding government statistics and data
◦ Using subscription databases such as ICPSR
Data consultations
◦ One-on-one assistance distinguishing between sources of data for research
projects.
4. Policies
◦ Assist users in acquiring freely available data in conjunction with
the library liaison.
◦ Attempt to purchase data sets for UNCG researchers dependent
upon funding and the Library’s ability to comply with license and
use restrictions.
◦ Methodological questions or data analysis/interpretation are not
in the scope of the Library's Data Services.
◦ The Library does not support GIS but offers GIS-lite products such
as SimplyMap.
5. Getting Started
Use literature searches in PsychINFO to isolate possible
quantitative studies.
Keep in mind not all of that data will be available.
Look for large studies.
Be flexible with time frame.
Try specific government agencies

19. MyData Account
◦ MyData account – operates as
authentication
◦ Authenticate once every six
months on campus and you
can carry it with you
20. Data-Related Publications
A searchable database . . .
◦ containing over 62,500 citations of known published and unpublished works resulting from
analyses of data archived at ICPSR
◦ Works are associated with their relevant study…
21. Social Science Variables Database (SSVD)
Enables ICPSR users to search & compare
variables across datasets
Assists in:
◦ Data discovery
◦ Comparison/harmonization projects
◦ Data harvesting & data analysis
◦ Question mining for designing new research
◦ Research methods & substantive courses instruction
25. ICPSR Summer Program in Quantitative Methods

26. Teaching Resources to Bring Data into the
Classroom
Easy to use features of ICPSR’s website in classes
◦ Social Science Variables Database
◦ Bibliography of Data-Related Literature
◦ SDA – Online Analysis
Additionally, in partnership with teaching faculty, ICPSR has developed:
◦ Short Exercises – the DDLGs
◦ Online teaching modules
◦ Online tutorials
29. “Data Curation”
◦Process used to add value to data, maximize access, and
ensure long-term preservation
◦Data are organized, described, cleaned, enhanced, and
preserved for public use, much like the work done on
paintings or rare books to make the works accessible to
the public now and in the future
◦Curation provides meaningful and enduring access to data
◦Data curation is the foundation for effective, long-term
data sharing
30. Three Sustainable Data Sharing Models
◦Fee-for-access model (membership archive)
◦Agency model (agency or foundation funds
public access)
◦Fee-for-deposit model (researcher writes fee
into grant and pays at deposit to fund public
access)
