Recipe For The Ultimate Workplace
1. A RECIPE FOR THE ULTIMATE WORKPLACE
Great chocolate chip cookies need to have the perfect balance of ingredients. If there is
mismanagement in the recipe-cookies can be burnt or inedible. Workplaces are similar
to cookies. An organization negligent in considering their conflict resolution process,
can expect to experience turmoil, employee’s dissatisfaction, and loss of productivity.
To make the cookie eating experience enjoyable each ingredient needs equal
consideration. The same philosophy applies an organization; every aspect of the
workplace requires consensus building with employee input, to foster a positive work
environment.
So how do we make the Ultimate Chocolate Chip Cookie? Well, let’s look first at the four
major ingredients. We need margarine, sugar, eggs, and flour. Without these staples
there are not any cookies. In the workplace there are also four necessary ingredients.
These are justice, efficiency, engagement, and resource sufficiency. We require these
four components to manage workplace conflict, resulting in “workplace fairness.”
Workplace Fairness
Most conflict management and change management systems include obtaining data on
the company’s general history and background. Workplace Fairness takes the process
even further. Power relationships, demographics, office culture, internal and external
laws, and subcultures undergo a microscopic examination from the employee’s
perspective. Like when we cannot find the chocolate chips and take every item out of
the cupboard, resulting in a thorough knowledge of said cupboard. After finding the
chocolate chips, we are ready to add the final touches to the batter. With the
information about the organization, we can take the steps to improve our conflict
management workplace culture. This means looking how we apply justice in the
workplace including how we handle problems, formally and informally. What would be
better? Should we have an ombudsman, peer support, or a mediation system before
going to a grievance? With efficiency, how do we focus on employee’s interests and
helping them to resolve their own conflicts, and what is the cost of the system? When
engaging employees, do we listen to everyone’s input, and if making changes are we
willing to consider proper change management techniques. Resource sufficiency
requires flexibility, the ability to educate employees about the workplace fairness system
and the quick resolution of problems.
“Workplace Fairness” works by humanizing the conflict resolution process of an organization,
allowing employees to create in a thriving, safe company, where everyone can enjoy chocolate
chip cookies.
