6. Your Mission
Your final mission will be to present to our school
an awareness program about the importance of
the 3R’s in our school and community
You will begin your mission next week in the
computer lab with a web quest to gain more
knowledge about the 3R’s in order to prepare a
well-informed project.
After the successful completion of the web quest,
your next mission will be to choose a specific
independent project related to the 3 R’s. You will
use your decision making talents to help you
decide on a specific topic of interest.
Then, using your planning talents, you will plan,
design, and prepare a project around your topic
of interest. Finally you will inform our school
about the importance of the 3 R’s, how our
school can participate in the 3 R’s and what we
can do to have a prosperous 3 R’s program at
Kelly Springs?
Good Luck!
Your school is depending on you!

Why Recycle? Why Does LinC need to have a Recycling Awareness Campaign? Why?
Saves Natural Resources - By making products from recycled materials instead of new materials, we conserve land and reduce the need to drill for oil and dig for minerals.
Saves Energy - It usually takes less energy to make recycled products; recycled aluminum, for example, takes 95% less energy than new aluminum from ore.Saves Clean Air and Water - In most cases, making products from recycled materials creates less air pollution and water pollution than making products from new materials.Saves Landfill Space - When the materials that you recycle go into new products, they don't go into landfills or incinerators, so landfill space is conserved.Saves Money and Creates Jobs - The recycling process creates far more jobs than landfills or incinerators, and recycling can frequently be the least expensive waste management method for cities and towns.
If we can reduce the materials we consume we will not only create less waste, we also will not need to worry about what to do with all the things that we buy when we are done with them. Reuse is a great way to make the most of the things that we do buy. Once we no longer need or want something, pass it on! One man’s trash is another man’s treasure. We can recycle up to 84% of our trash simply by taking it out of the garbage can and putting it in the recycling bin. Items made from recycled materials take far less energy and create only a fraction of the pollution to produce than items made from brand new materials. Of course, imagine the natural resources that are saved!
After the groups have shared their list, explain the following.
There are several materials that are now being recycled. Paper is one of the easiest but each time it is recycled, the cellulose fibers in the paper shorten and weaken, reducing the quality of the paper. Some minerals can be recycled such as glass and aluminum. Junked cars are recycled. Many other metals are also recycled such as silver from photographic film and x-rays, copper from car radiators and telephone and utility cables, lead from car batteries, and zinc from plumbing materials. Other materials being recycled are motor oil and plastic.
Have the students brainstorm ways they think all our recycling and other efforts impact our environment and our school. Do they think it is a waste of time. Is it worth it? Does it really save our planet?
Explain the following:
When aluminum is recycled instead of refining new aluminum, water and air pollution is decreased as well as consumption of energy. The recycling of motor oil keeps several toxic substances such as lead, cadium, arsenic and benzene from polluting our land and air, not to mention the consumption of energy that is reduced in this process to clean as opposed to refining. The 3R’s reduce the amount of waste produced and the resulting disposal problems. They are also less polluting, cheaper and more energy-efficient than taking new material from the environment.
Provide them with the following information to guide their thinking. There are several ways of imposing the 3 R’s. One is certainly to buy products made from recycled materials which completes the recycling circle. Another way which is most popular is to recycle/reuse paper, plastic, glass and other items through curbside recycling pickup or centers designated for that purpose. Repair items like appliances so that the garbage in landfills will be reduced.
Today, to prepare for your mission, you are going review a creative thinking technique you have previously learned, SCAMPER, which will help you in understanding the 3 R’s.
