Water pollution is the introduction of
chemical, biological and physical matter into water
that degrade the quality of life that lives in it and
consumes it.
4. What causes pollution?
Most of the pollution in the River Tagus is
caused by organic waste. Industries, water treatment
stations, power stations, domestic sewage and
industrial, dump wastes on the river.
However, other factors also contribute to the
pollution of the River Tagus, such as wastes of heavy
metals, radioactive substances and polluted affluents
like Trancão river. When toxic substances enter in
water bodies, they get dissolved or lie suspended in
water or get deposited on the bed. This results in the
pollution of water.

Pollution has a detrimental effect on any living
organism in an environment, making it virtually
impossible to sustain life. This effects are not only
devastating to people but also to animals. The most
polluted area is the River Tagus estuary. It is a serious
problem because this area is habited by many
wildlife species that consume polluted water getting
so sick and may even die.

8. Pollution control
At Expo 98, there was a concern with the quality
of the river water and proceeded to clean up. There
was money, techniques and options that allow it to
be a successful project. It was just for clean up the
Loures municipality, but later some municipalities of
Tagus Valley were also added to the project to clean
up. However, disagreements meant that the project
was never completed. There are also ETARs that
prevent pollution of Tagus.
