Scope for this session
Statements
Case 3TU.Datacentrum
Questions/discussion “Never, ever, think outside the box.” ;-)“Never, ever, think outside the box.” ;-)
3. Recommendations (15:4:60=?)
5. Liaise to foster interoperable infrastructure.
6. Support lifecycle for research data by services for
storage, discovery and permanent access.
7. Promote data citation by PID’s.
8. Provide institutional Data Catalogue or Data Repository.
4. Reducing scope to
Discovery, Permanent access, Interoperability services.
Questions for discussion at the end:
When generic, when subject/data specific approach?
Collaborate on institute/national/international level?
To what extent library centric?
5. Statements (several sources)
Discovery
Mapping of infrastructures and repositories required!
Start work on discovery within disciplines, followed by
development of discovery across disciplines.
Permanent access
Balance “(Short term) usability” vs. “Long term availability”.
Balance “Open” vs. “Privacy, Security, Valorisation”.
Balance costs: “Curate” vs. “Regenerate”.
6. Statements
Interoperability
Key: Involve all relevant partners.
Sensible mix bottom-up and top-down approaches.
Use common standards (AND subject specific standards).
General
Work on required culture shift (to sharing, trust & openness) in all
possible ways.
7. ‘Case’ 3TU.Datacentrum
1. Initiate, with researchers (2003-2007)
e-Archive, Darelux
2. Develop, with other libraries (2008-2012)
3TU.Datacentrum, DataCite NL, Data-Intelligence4Lib
3. Facilitate & organise with Institutional IT etc., other data
repositories and national bodies, …
Research Data NL (with DANS), Data-labs

Think BIG, start small, Act Now!
Notas do Editor
Links to: 9. Get involved in subject specific practices 10. Provide secure storage for dynamic & static data with institutional IT and/or cloud services.
Discovery Researchers and support staff need to know where data is/can be found. And searching for and inside data should be possible. To enable (re)use! (justification of all investments) Permanent access Be aware: do not trade in usability for most secure archiving. Start open. Be (a little) critical of what data you’ll curate. Start a.s.a.p.
Interoperability Collaborate with the communities that work with the data. Adopt community standards and add generic level (library role). General Engage! Another library role.
1) Started on our own, followed by project with researchers 2) DOI’s are like carrots for researchers! Started with small team but needed more skilled people to encounter majority of researchers at Univ.’s. DI4L: participants from over 25 organizations, example to previous JISC call, working on version 3. 3) From push to ‘pull’, receiving requests, … Starting to worry about the amount of work ;-)
Researchers NOT interested in institutional approaches for Discovery/catalogueing NOT (only) institutional Standards Interoperability … Institutional support wanted for …?
