Thomas Jefferson's ideals and beliefs were derived from a deep regard for life, liberty, and
freedom. His concept of individual freedoms strongly disagreed with the notion of a "guided
republic" which he believed concentrated a great deal unchecked power among a few people. This
could have the potential of tyrannical government that might suppress personal freedoms of any
kind especially those of religion, which Jefferson feels very strongly felt should be protected. After
fighting hard to rid America of British domination, Jefferson was determined to create a government

sentiment…as derived from the laws of nature" . In his most famous document, the
Declaration of Independence, he stated "that all men are created equal; that they are endowed by
their Creator with certain [inherent and] inalienable rights; that among these are life, liberty, and
the pursuit of happiness" . Jefferson was a strong advocate of a bill of rights within the
Constitution. In a letter to James Madison, he says that he "did not like…the omission of a
bill of rights providing…for freedom of religion [and for] freedom of the press" . Jefferson
was in favor of religious freedom because it did him "no injury for [his] neighbour to say there are
twenty gods, or no god" . Jefferson wrote the Bill for Establishing Religious Freedom which

years of his life, he stayed at his mansion, Monticello. Just hours before his close friend Adam was to
signing the fiftieth anniversary of the Declaration of Independence, Thomas Jefferson died on July 4,

pay off the national debt. With this decision came many pros and cons. For example, pros of
cutting the military were, less spending, no national debt,, and a smaller government. The cons of
this action were, less security, can't defend all boarders, easier for other countries to take over,
people lost their jobs, and there is no one to fight in the wars. The first pro of jefferson's action is
less spending. By cutting down the military you wouldn't have to pay as much for equipment, war

However, amazingly, he was able to reduce the national debt of the United States. Although no
precedents were set, he added land to the United States with the purchase of the Louisiana Territory
from Napoleon Bonaparte in 1803. This land purchase was important due to the fact that it nearly
doubled the land size of the United States. Throughout his presidency, Jefferson maintained his
beliefs in equality and democracy by getting rid of all of the racial and religious standards at his
political gatherings. Jefferson left office after two terms in the year 1809, and moved to his
mountaintop home in Virginia. In his latter post–political years, Jefferson became what many would
call a "sage". He advised new presidents on the Napoleonic Wars as well as many other topics of
importance. Outside of politics, Jefferson lived life to its' fullest. He was in great physical shape.
He would rise early and read until breakfast. He would then follow up with a four to five hour
horse ride on his farm, and then he would enjoy his dinner. Finally, he would read and write in his

published in 1994.
The biography I read was Thomas Jefferson and it was very enlightening and informative. The story
began in Shadwell, Virginia where Thomas Jefferson was born in 1743 and raised until he was
approximately 18. Thomas Jefferson's parents were well off, but his father died when Thomas was
14. When Jefferson was 17 years old, he got permission to attend the College of William and Mary.

I think it expanded greatly on Thomas Jefferson's great qualities and only briefly stated any bad
qualities he may have possessed, such as, speaking in public, Sally Hemmings and his slave
ownership. Risjord willingly explains his wonderful writings like the Tea Act Reform (page 22) and
the Declaration of Independence. (page 28–32) Even though Norman Risjord may have been
somewhat sympathetic to Thomas Jefferson, I feel in no way was Norman Risjord apologetic
towards Jefferson. Norman Risjord did and excellent job of stating the true facts about Thomas
Jefferson without seeming apologetic or critical at any time. I feel that most of the time the book
was a very fair and balanced appraisal of Thomas Jefferson.
During this time period of this book, Jefferson and most all of the other main characters were faced
with several hardships. The characters were, in one way or another, an integral part of putting
America together. Jefferson was faced with several problems during that time. He and the other
characters were faced with uneasiness of no knowing what would have been best for America. They

Jefferson spent nearly a decade in France leading up to the French Revolution. While he was away a
constitutional convention was held to write a new supreme law for the country. When the new
Constitution of the United States of America was ratified in 1788 Jefferson supported it for the

lack of a bill of rights. Above all else he was in favor of the rights of the people and he wanted to
protect them at all times.
Jefferson returned to America in 1789 after the on set of the French Revolution. In 1790 he was
nominated by President George Washington to become the first Secretary of State. During this time
he proved himself to be an excellent leader and was given the republican presidential nomination for
the 1796 election.

Who was Thomas Jefferson? Most people just think of him as the man who wrote the Declaration of
Independence or just one of our many presidents. That's not the case. Jefferson was more than that,
He was a very intelligent man and a loving father and grandfather. Thomas Jefferson was also an
inventor and one of the most significant men in the history of making America who we are today.
One of our founding fathers and our third president, Thomas Jefferson was a very well–known man.
He was born on April 13th, 1743 in a small town called Shadwell in Virginia. He was born at his
father 's tobacco plantation on the Rivanna River, which flows through a gap in a small range
called the Southwest Mountains. In 1760 when Jefferson turned 17 he rode to Williamsburg so he
could attend the college of William and Mary. (Twilight at Monticello, 14) After college Thomas
Jefferson soon founded the University of Virginia. Years later during the Revolutionary war, he
decided to write the Declaration of Independence ending the war and declaring America's

A Summary was a relatively short piece, with its point to be speaking towards the American people
in general not just to an elitist group. It looked upon the struggle for justice within American
Colonist's lives (Bottorff, 33). However Jefferson's main idea within this book was that the British
government had too much authority over Colonial America (Peterson, 1). A Summary contained
grievances to the British government and toward the King himself. Jefferson even went through

While he was in office he suppressed the power of the Federalists quite well and even beat Charles
Pinckney in the presidential election of 1804 by an electoral vote of 162–14. Understandably, after
his term ended, the Federalists were able to seize more power, but that hasn't kept the Jeffersonian

heavily are the Declaration of Independence also the transcript of "From Subjects to Citizens." In the

captive on the high seas to bear arms against their country, to become the executioners of their
