This PPT is intended as an outline for librariansIt highlights what needs to be covered during Session 2.You do not need to show this PPT in class.Search examples used here taken from class readingsFeel free to search your own topic examples related to the readings
Start presentation by showing how to get to the library homepage (whether it’s from the Mason homepage or simply typing in library. gmu.edu) Can also mention that Honors College InfoGuide has catalog search box on welcome page
Focus on the quick catalog search from the library homepage for simplicity Start with a keyword search Honors College wants us to stress aspects of the “research process” so talk about… Process of refining a search How one relevant item leads to another & another, etc. Different ways to approach a search Use an example from their readings: Frederick Douglas, Rosa Parks, Civil Rights Movement, etc. Example here shows Rosa Parks as a general keyword search.
Following catalog search-> discuss results page Title, call #, location, status, date Process of evaluating results Pick relevant title from results list as example to discuss further
*Example of catalog record inserted here as PDF. See next to 2 slides for information to highlight in class.
Highlight parts of the record: title, author, subjects, extra information like bibliography or maps, etc. Note information needed for citation Click on a subject link to show: Browsing concept Find more items New search terms

Point out other ways to search the catalog like using quotation marks around a phrase & Boolean searching with AND. Time permitting, also show advanced search option and possibly truncation searching. Honors College faculty mentioned advanced search strategies in their documents. Incorporate when appropriate.
Briefly mention other ways to search catalog through Library Catalogs link.WRLC Time limitations will prevent in-depth discussion of the WLRC. However, students need to know that the WRLC is an option and how to get to its catalog using the Mason library website.
Optional, if time permits Example here is Rosa Parks AND civil rights. Search as “all of these” or as phrase depending on example You can use this search or another search based on class readings. If a student has chosen as paper topic, you can also use the topic as an example. However, it’s still early in the semester. Briefly discuss search results
