2. Augmented Reality: The Real Experience
Augmented Reality. What is it? How is it relevant to education and research?
Want to know more?
This 90 minute session is an opportunity to find out more about augmented
reality:
● An overview to the many ways it is starting to be used across society by
companies such as IKEA, the BBC
● Practical educational examples from libraries and subject disciplines.
● Demonstrations including 3D-dinosaurs, interactive video, fieldwork and
medical simulation.
● Get hands-on and create your own augmented reality content!

3. What is Augmented Reality?
Augmented Reality is the real-time overlaying of digital
content onto reality, viewed through a device such as a
mobile phone, tablet or headset.

Reality is augmented but still viewed passively

Encourages interaction with the augmented content or
enables creation of additional content then and there

The iPad [was used] to localize the two tumors in the liver. It was very
exciting as it was one of the first operations to be carried out in this
way within Germany.
Developed by Fraunhofer MEVIS in Bremen, this procedure helps
locate critical structures such as tumors and vessels and is expected
to improve the quality of transferring pre-operational resection plans
into actual surgery, according to Bianka Hofmann from the institute.
