Lesson Plan Title: Slow Down a Chemical Reaction
Concept / Topic To Teach: In order to understand chemical reactions students must
know several concepts: subscripts, coefficients, reactants, products law of conservation
of mass, energy is either liberated or absorbed.
Standards Addressed: Chemical reactions are processes in which atoms are rearranged
into different combinations of molecules.
General Goal(s):
1. students realize that in chemical reactions, atoms will rearrange and form
molecules with different properties.
2. students clearly understand the law of conservation of mass
3. students understand the meaning of subscripts and coefficients
Specific Objectives:
1. students will create digital story outlining the steps of a chemical reaction
a. reactants
b. after reaction starts
c. later after reaction starts
d. products
2. the story must include a slide that clarifies the following vocabulary: law of
conservation of mass, coefficient, subscript, reactant, product
Required Materials:
1. computer capable of running Photo Story 3 or equivalent for each group
2. either computer drawn images or a way to scan hand drawn pictures
3. speakers and microphone for each group
Anticipatory Set (Lead-In):
Students will complete a WISE program called Hydrogen Fuel Cells
Step-By-Step Procedures:
1. choose groups
2. students choose from a list of chemical reactions
3. students drawn either by hand or with a computer draw program all the slides
required for the assignment
4. if drawn by hand, pictures must be scanned
5. students organize pictures and write down the narration for each
6. import pictures into Photo Story 3
7. type the narration into the notes for each image
8. record the voice as the student reads the narration
9. present digital story to class
Plan For Independent Practice:
Students will use physical wooden models of atoms to create various molecules:
oxygen gas, hydrogen gas, carbon dioxide, water, and methane.
Closure (Reflect Anticipatory Set): Students will critique other student digital report
using a rubric that we develop together in a brainstorming session.
Assessment Based On Objectives: Students will organize pictures of chemical reactions
into the appropriate sequence.
Adaptations (For Students With Learning Disabilities):
This task is associated with pictures so the abstract idea of atoms and chemical
reactions is easier to grasp.
Extensions (For Gifted Students):
Students have a choice of what reaction to demonstrate. The choices go from
simple to extremely complicated.
Possible Connections To Other Subjects: Chemical Bonding, Atomic Structure
