Nouns and their jobs
1. Subject: the noun tells whom or what the sentence is about
Example: A cat is walking along the fence. The cat jumped onto my
lap.
Predicate Nominative: the noun renames or defines the subject after
a linking verb.
Example:
His favorite animal is a cat.
Direct Object: the noun names the receiver of the action of the verb--
always follows an action verb
Example:
Your dog chased my cat.
Indirect Object: the noun tells to whom/ to what OR for whom/for
what an action is done--found in between the action verb and the
direct object
Example: Dad gave the cat dinner.
Object of the Prepositional Phrase: the noun that follows a
preposition and answers what about the preposition
Example: Mom danced with the cat
