2. THE WANTED – WALKS LIKE RIHANNA
In this video, a boy band called The Wanted recreate famous scenes from
classic boy band music videos, with references to N’Sync, The Backstreet
Boys and Take That. They echo music videos ranging from Take That's
'Back For Good' to Backstreet Boys' 'I Want It That Way'. The song is a
cheesy pop song, with no deeper meaning than a girl having an appealing
walk. It peaked at #4 on the UK Singles Chart, and #3 in Ireland. The music
video was first shown on 7th May 2013, at a total length of 3:34.

SHOT-REVERSE-SHOT
The opening shots of the video are a shot reverse shot of the woman walking. This woman
is the subject of the song and the woman that has the walk all the boys like.
This shot reverse shot shows shots of the woman walking, then shots of the boys looking as
if they are enjoying the walking. They seem shocked as the woman could be stunning. This
shot shows voyeurism and also shows how the boys enjoy looking at girls. It shows that the
girl is what they are all looking at and they all think she is attractive.
This shot is effective as it portrays the woman is sexually appealing and that it sets the tone
of what the video will be about. It also shows all the band members in the first 10 seconds
of the video.
The shot of the boys is a continuous pan which cuts to the legs then back to the continuous
pan. This gives a smooth effect and looks good on the final video.

CAMERA ANGLE, SHOT TYPE & POSITION
This shot is an example of a low angle wide shot,
with a foreground out of focus and the background
in focus. By using this shot it shows that the man
is looking at the woman's legs in an interesting
way. The shot is executed well. The angle is low
down which could suggest voyeurism as he could
be creeping around the girls legs.
The shot is at a low angle to perhaps show power
of the band member or to get the girls legs in shot.
This shot is of the crew members not enjoying the
woman's singing and dancing. It is a medium wide shot
of them all holding their ears or cringing. This shot is
effective for the narrative as it shows how they are not
happy with her singing. It adds comedy to the video. The
shot includes the light which adds a bad lighting flair
across the screen. Also the crew equipment is in shot
showing where the video is being shot and establishes
the scene. The shot shows four crew members.

INTERTEXTUAL REFERENCES
In this video, The Wanted make multiple references to classic music videos of past boy bands. This is a
homage, as they are respecting their superior boy bands. It is not a parody as it is not making fun of
bands like N’Sync and the Backstreet Boys, they are just having fun and respecting them.
In the comparisons below, the bands are wearing the same clothing, and the set is extremely similar.
The dancing is also the same in the videos, which shows how The Wanted are referencing other artists in
this video.
The Wanted use these intertextual references for comedic purposes and to try and make the video
funny. As the song has little meaning, this reference can be used to fill the time as it doesn’t mean
anything. It makes the video funny and interesting, and also will make people want to know more about
the original sources.
The Wanted are a fairly new boy band and this video shows how they are respecting the classic boy
bands. A lot of detail has been put into the recreations of the scenes which reflects well on The Wanted,
as it shows they put effort into their work.

VOYEURISM AND CLOSE UPS
This video has lots of sexual close up shots. This is because the video is about looking at women and the
message is if a girl looks good then she is fine, no matter of their talent or personality. The song is very
shallow and one dimensional. The chorus is “She can't sing, she can't dance but who cares, she walks
like Rihanna.”
The point of voyeurism is to increase popularity of the music video with men. However the demographic
for the Wanted is teenage girls. By deploying voyeuristic shots it shows that the Wanted might be trying
to expand their normal fan base or just increase viewership of this video.
The voyeurism also reinforces the message of the song, which shows how the lyrics and video link
together. The idea of voyeurism is watching without being watched, and a lot of people enjoy it. The point
of voyeurism in music videos is to stimulate the audience and promote a sexual image.
The sexual close ups are also used to promote the idea that she Walks Like Rihanna. These shots are
promiscuous and sexual, and will be shown in the public, which could promote the music video.

MULTI -IMAGE & CHROMA KEY
In this shot near the end of the video, all the scenes are
added to one shot in a four way multi-image shot. This is
done in the post-production by making all the clips smaller
and putting them next together on the screen. It is a good
way of summarising the video and is used before the final
chorus. This puts the whole video into context. All the shots
are from the video but they have repeated in this multi-image.
However this doesn’t look bad because you cant
focus on just the one image. It is used to add more depth to
the video because lots of things are going on.
This shot and the majority of the
video is done on a green screen
using Chroma key. They will
perform in front of a green
background and that will be
replaced with the correct image
or video as the background in the
post production. This is a good
way of saving money on building
sets. It also looks good and can
be cheap. Also, if you change
your mind on the background it is
easily changed.
This is a short shot of one of the
boys in front of a green screen
giggling. This shot has no
background and is used at the end
of the video. It shows that green
screen was used in the video.
8. PRODUCT PLACEMENT
There are lots of shots of bottles of water from the brand ‘WAT-AAH!’.
This is an example of product placement, as the company
probably paid The Wanted to be featured in the music video.
‘WAT-AAH!’ is a brand aimed for children and teens. They sell
spring water, in order to make kids healthy. By advertising the
water it makes it ‘cooler’ which will make kids want to drink it.
For The Wanted to advertise the product it shows they care about
the health of their audience. This product placement increases
the income for The Wanted and increases their image.
9. EDITING FEATURES
This shot is black in white. This effect
is achieved in the post production.
This is done to create variety in the
video and create interesting shots. By
putting this scene in black and white it
creates a sombre mood.
The first shot of the video is a black
screen with a title saying “The Video
Meeting”. This is a still title, added
in post production. It adds context to
the video and instantly shows where
the video is set as soon as it starts.
This is the only title of the video.
11. GENRE CONVENTIONS & DOMINANT IDEOLOGIES
In the boy band pop genre the music videos usually have the band singing and
dancing in synchronisation or doing dance routines. Also the boy bands will have
‘normal/homemade’ footage in the videos of them being ‘themselves’. This gives
the audience something to connect with and will make them feel like they now
the band. This video conforms with these conventions as there are multiple shots
of the band performing and dancing. Also there are shots at the end of the boys
messing around on set and it has been added in to show a personality of the
characters. This is an aspect of the Star Theory as it is trying to give created pop
star characters individual traits and quirks, in order to create an interesting group
of musicians. Also a lot of videos in the pop boy band genre include shots of
attractive women, as the song is usually about love. This video conforms with this
convention as at the end the woman that the song is about and the centre of the
boys affection is wearing extremely revealing clothing and the camera shots
display that.
Dominant ideologies of pop music include themes of love and happiness. Pop
music usually doesn't meaning and the videos can therefore not have much
meaning, leading to cheesy and generic videos.
12. LAURA MULVEY
Laura Mulvey came up with the idea of a gaze. It is a technique in which the camera lingers
around the features of a women, usually the curves. It is a way of displaying video through a
heterosexual males eyes. It can also be done to see how women look at other women, or
how women look at themselves. It is a type of voyeurism but happens often, especially in
music videos. Some argue that it is good because some women enjoy being looked at, and
other believe it is used to analyse clothing, but it is mainly used for sexual purposes. It
relegates women to the standard of objects for men. Some also believe that a gaze is a
psychological thing, as the gazer has more power than the object of the gaze.
It is used in this video many times in the last scene, because the whole song is about
looking at women's sexual features, no matter of their talent or personality. However it is
odd because the target audience of The Wanted are teenage girls, who won’t want to see
these shots. Maybe The Wanted are trying to expand their fan base to males in order to
extend their income.
13. ANDREW GOODWIN
Genre Characteristics:
The Wanted have conformed to
pop boy band videos by dancing
in a routine and performing in
their music video. Even though
the majority of the time they do
this is in homage to previous
boy bands, it still occurs and has
the same effect on the
audience.
Voyeurism:
In this video, the object of the boys
affection is the director character,
and in the end scene she is wearing
very little clothing and is dancing
seductively with the boys. This
increases the boys sex appeal.
Relationship between
music and visuals:
The lyrics are “She can’t sing, she
can’t dance.” and in this part of the
song the character is dancing badly
and singing badly, which is backed
up even more by shots of the other
crew characters holding their ears
or cringing.
Star Characteristics:
Andrew Goodwin believes that the
artists will have a visual style that
recurs across multiple types of work.
For example, this boy is supposed to be
cheeky and funny, which is shown in
this screenshot.
Intertextual References:
This is used heavily in this video, as that is
the concept of the video. The Wanted want
to recreate famous boy bands for humour
and respect purposes.
14. THE STAR THEORY
Ri c h ard Dye r’ s s t ar t h e or y i s :
“A s t a r i s a n image not a real person that is constructed (as
any other aspect of fiction is) out of a range of materials (eg
adver tising, magazines etc as wel l as fi lms [music] ). ” -
mediaknowall.com 2014.
In the Wanted, the boys have their own personality. For
example, Siva is the dark and mysterious one. This personality
wi l l continue through al l of his work, and fans wi l l relate to
that. By each star having a personality it makes the fans feel
connected to the ar tists and it feels as if they know them.
Also, with the integration of social networking site such as
Twitter and Instagram, the personality of the boys can be out
into the public more of ten, and on a more personal level .
