Have you ever received feedback on new website mockups or prototypes starting with “Which language is that? I don’t understand “lorem ipsum!!”? Well, yes? Then you’ve been there. And it isn’t really a great feeling. Not because of the question itself. In this post we are going to show you 5 tips on how to prevent yourself from receiving such feedback and how to make your website mockups even better.

The demand for user experience designers has skyrocketed. Interest in UX as a career has soared along with that demand. However, this demand is only for designers with 3 years of experience or more. There are simply not enough experienced designers to fill these positions, and this experience gap is a barrier to offering potential designers a consistent path from interest to employment. Many have observed that design is a craft. How do you learn a craft? Education and practice. Apprenticeship is a model that fits that bill well, and during the summer and fall of 2013 The Nerdery‘s UX team put it into practice. I want to share our program’s successes and failures, our challenges and solutions, and some of the nitty-gritty details that made it work. The goal of this presentation is to show UX teams in educational institutions how to combine the infrastructure of apprenticeship with their unique business context to help address this problem.

Slide deck for the talk I did at CodeMotion Madrid 2013. Many organizations turn towards agile to escape failing traditional software development. Due to this increase in popularity, many newcomers enter the field. Without the necessary real-life experience but proudly waving certificates from two days of training. During this challenging talk Sander shows what happens to projects that are coached by ill-experienced coaches, and how to move around anti-patterns as Scrumdamentalism, Dogmatic Agile, Bob-the-Builder or Scrumman.

Drawing static pictures and annotating them in a laborious, impenetrable Word document or PDF doesn’t cut it anymore. The richest communication tool is to depict an actual experience in prototype form. And for the web sites and applications we work on most, no form is closer to the real thing than the real thing: an HTML prototype. Over the past two years, EightShapes has transformed it’s UX design practice to empower all designers – from information architects to visual experts – to utilize HTML prototypes as the leading, iterative communications device for a project. The learning curve is gentle for some, steep for others. But it’s made us all better designers and more effective communicators over time.

Pair Programming and Test Driven Development (two of the twelve XP practices) are highly effective development practices. However, there remains a lot of misconceptions about these practices in the industry. The inaugural PhillyXP meeting will be a workshop about pair programming and TDD. We will discuss the misconceptions and benefits of Pair Programming, and then split into pairs to use pair programming and TDD to solve a set of problems.

Do you also wake up sweating during those hot summer nights, but you are too lazy to get out of bed to turn a fan on? Using serverless with Firebase Cloud Functions, Google Assistant, a Raspberry Pi and a bit of wiring I turned my old fan in a state of the art fan with voice control. Now I enjoy the luxury of no longer having to get up to turn it on/off when it's too hot, cold or noisy. In this talk I will show you how easy it is to give your fan a second life while you are living a more luxurious life. Additionally, it might inspire you to do something comparable yourself!

Before product/market fit startups hack to validate. After product/market fit startups hack to grow. Real growth hacking is NOT the new marketing. It is the intersection between product, marketing and data. When you place Product/Tech into this "equation" your startup will have a myriad of way to ignite and drive growth. In the age of social, the right growth strategy with the right product-market fit will lead to massive scale through viral loops. (Aaron Ginn).

The web is not a fixed width, and Steve Fisher thinks we are remembering that. If our medium is fluid, should our process be fixed? Steve prefers designing within the browser, especially when responsive design is a requirement. Fireworks and Photoshop are not flexible enough to demonstrate media queries, button and menu states, HTML5 and JavaScript behaviors, dynamic resizing of elements and navigation flow. Because the medium is fluid, our approach to design has to be fluid as well. A responsive process is a responsible process, matching the medium. After working with many companies and organizations, helping them transform their process to fit a responsive workflow, Steve is going to share the goods. One web to rule them all!

I'd love to tell you a story about how the software I created helped my community. Sadly, I can't: nothing I built ever found an audience. This talk is about how I failed to reach a community, about why it doesn't matter - or rather: what I learned from being stuck in an open source team of one. For years I was convinced that the success of an open source project was determined by the usefulness of the software. My imaginary blueprint of open sourcing was: Build something useful Open source it Everybody wins It turns out that it is much harder than that. This talk is about how I built several tools that would help the UX community to deliver awesome products with a great experience, while never finding an audience for the tools. We'll look at all the mistakes one can make and what to do instead to build a thriving community. And even if you don't find an audience: Zero adoption does not mean zero value. We'll look at how there is great benefit in building and publishing things, if not for others then for yourselves.

Lean Product Development is predicated on validating assumptions that we make about the product we want to build in lightweight ways; user research, contextual studies, paper prototypes, simple clickable prototypes. A few short weeks of these activities can massively reduce the risk of building the wrong thing, and in a world where developing the wrong software can cost millions or sink a company, the investment can be well-worth the time. So how do you structure a project so that Product and Design have an opportunity to answer necessary questions, while making sure you're not wasting developer resources or boring the crud out of your team? This joint presentation by Pivotal Labs Product Manager Rosemary King, and UX Designer Simon Phillips will explore why up front investment in Discovery and Framing set up a project on solid foundation, how to involve development teams in the exploration and synthesis process, and how to set a cadence for your UX design work so that a comfortable buffer exists to allow for continual evolution of the product based on user feedback and changing understanding. Baked into the presentation will be case studies, challenges and lessons learned on recent lean/agile projects.

The key to hapiness is being able to make your own decisions. An it's also the key to productivity, health and better quality of life. In a startup everybody makes important decisions not only about the company itself but also about their role in it. To understand this is key for a fast growing company and a team of happy and productive people. These are the slides of Jordi Romero talk at itnig, where he shared his experiences through a lot of interesting stories that happened to him during his years in Teambox and itnig.

Do you gather metrics from your application? Can you combine them and easily generate custom graphs out of them? Can your developers measure whatever they want at any point of your application without breaking it or making it slower? In our next itnig friday, Víctor Martínez will show us how easy it is to roll on your own Graphite installation and how to use Etsy's statsd collector to flush your metrics. You will learn what Graphite is, how all of its components work, how to get your real time&historic metrics into Carbon, Graphite's database, and how to plot them in different manners. Víctor will show us some Graphite dashboards, alternative statds implementations, detailed common Graphite configuration gotchas, design limitations and how to deal with them. <a>Visit details</a>

¿cómo he de emitir mi factura?

Cities are known for its complexities and operational inefficiencies. cities remain dynamic ,ever evolving, ever devolving, never static and never finite. All cities remain different, distinct, unique and universal. No two cities are similar. Each city has its own strength, weaknesses, opportunities and threats. Accordingly, problem faced by any city cannot be viewed, dissected, analyzed and enumerated, while sitting within the four walls of the air-conditioned rooms and by the so called intellectual sitting in the so called offices determining the future of cities and towns. Neither the cities can be made more rational by limited knowledge agencies providing consultancy to cities , states and nations. For realistically and rationally understanding, analyzing the cities and having simple, cost-effective and quality solutions to the problems and challenges faced , Cities have to be walked through and concerns of the various communities have to be properly understood and appreciated. Prime reason for inability and lack of capacity on the part of majority of physical planners, engaged in the art and science of planning, designing and developing the cities, to address the issues and challenges faced by cities , realistically and rationally, has genesis in the lack of understanding of the origin, growth and development of cities. Lack of capacity in majority of town planners, has roots in the quality of education imparted and seriousness and commitment on the part of both teachers and taught involved. As it stands today, majority of institutions involved in imparting education in planning are being run on an ad-hoc manner and by proxy. Only few institutions have regular teachers and regular students. Majority of planning institutions are being run on proxy with proxy students and proxy teachers. Education system including curricula used for teaching, needs, review, revision and redefinition to make it more relevant to rational for addressing the issues and challenges faced by the cities and towns.

wkrm is a student-run, faculty-led design studio housed at the Department of Fine Arts building at the University of Texas at Austin. The studio provides students with the experience of working with clients in a realistic setting and support for their professional development. During the Fall 2023 semester, we worked with Austin Transit Partnership to provide student perspectives on campus mobility that may inform the design and future integration of the forthcoming Light Rail at The University of Texas at Austin. During the Spring 2024 semester, a new cohort of students advanced ideas for improving campus orientation and navigation by designing a pedestrian wayfinding system.

If cities are to made more livable, humane and productive, it is time that intent, contents and scope of globalization must be revisited and reviewed, both critically and objectively. Globalisation would need redefinition for promoting universality and inclusiveness among people and nations to have basic amenities and quality of life for all its residents , including poorest of the poor to lead a dignified life. Failure to redefine globalization, rationalise urbanisation, restore localization empowering poor and promoting universalisation and inclusivity; will invariably lead to making SDGs merely a paper exercise. In addition, making the world, cities and communities sustainable, livable, safe and inclusive, would remain merely a dream and a mirage, for future generations and communities, making planet earth as their preferred place of residence.

What can Singapore teach us about Design? No matter how beautifully-designed a city is, the approval will come from the people who use it - its citizens. And from this point of view, Singapore is impressively functional. A core value at the heart of its design next to harmony and consideration.
