Attacking the TEKS: Focus on Bonding presented by Claudia Wallace, ACT2 2010 This session will expose you to the new TEKS and College Readiness Standards. Ideas for sequencing and planning the unit will be shared along with tips for appropriate demos, labs, and assessments. The intended audience is for teachers with 3 or less years of experience or anyone who wants to delve deeper into the new standards.

Molecular Geometry Part I: Lewis Structures Using the grid provided, write the formula for the ion or molecule and draw the Lewis dot structure for each of the following. 1. methane, CH4 12. nitrate ion 2. carbon disulfide 13. carbon tetrachloride Lab Part II: In this lab activity, you will examine models of several possible combinations of electron pairs, both bonding and lone pairs, and bonded atoms. You will then describe the geometric arrangement of the atoms in the molecule. Lab Part III: In this lab you will examine models of several possible combinations of polyatomic molecules. You will then describe the polarity of the molecules for which you have drawn Lewis Dot Structures in Part I. Lab Part IV: Using the models in part II determine the hybridization present in each. Add this information to the chart from part II. Lab Part V: Look at the models from part II and identify the number of sigma (  ) bonds and pi (  ) bonds in each compound. Add this information to the chart from part II. 22 structures to draw in Part I for homework

4. Lewis Dot Formulas For each: 1. Draw the Lewis dot formula Some will be ionic and some will be covalent. If a transfer of electrons occurs, be sure to indicate the resulting charge on the cation or anion. 2. Name the compound (*** need Roman Numerals) 3.
