3. It is principally through interacting with others
that children find out what the culture is about
and how it conceives of the world.

● What are the advantages of flip teaching?
● Sha Tin College's flip teaching project.
● What does a flip lesson look like?
● What do students think of it?
5. Possible advantages of flip teaching
● Sustained personalised feedback from the
teacher becomes possible.
● Students can engage on work in an
environment that fosters collaboration
● Students more able to work at their own
preferred pace.
6. Our flip teaching project
● Began two years ago
● Our goal is to have the entire IB Diploma
Physics curriculum in video form uploaded to
the Physics department's Vimeo channel
● Approx 80% of the syllabus covered so far
● 60+ videos in the Vimeo channel
7. What can a flip lesson look like?
● Can take any number of
forms
● We tend to emphasise
collaboration with both
teacher and peers
● All lesson instructions
contained on the VLE
8. A recent example of a flip lesson
10 mins Students discuss the video with each other and teacher. Can rewatch
if necessary.
10 mins To assess their own level of understanding of the topic so far the
students complete a quiz (made by the teacher earlier) using google
forms.
10 mins Teacher displays summary of quiz answers and discusses them with
class.
30 mins Students placed in groups of 3-4 and given task of answering an IB
Physics question based on video content. The task is for the student to
not only answer the question but prepare a video/presentation
explaining how they answered it
Homework Finish the presentation and present it next lesson to the rest of the
class.
9. What do students think?
● 76% of students sampled said that they either agreed or strongly agreed with the statement that flip lessons
enable them to spend more time collaborating with their peers than in a traditional lesson.
● 88% of students sampled said they either agreed or strongly agreed with the statement that flip lessons enable
them to spend more time communicating with the teacher than in a traditional lesson.
Sample size = 50 students
Some student comments
● "I think it works well as an introductory lesson but as we go further into the topic I might want to ask questions
about something that the teacher is explaining."
● "Although flip teaching does help to save time in lessons, it does require more time spent by students in after
school hours, and it does heavily depend on students having the discipline, or remember to watch the videos at
home, or they will be falling behind in classes."
