Yemen, the world’s largest humanitarian crisis, and the largest Cholera crisis in
human history (UN)
• 24 millions out of 30 m Yemenis need assistance
• 18 m food insecure, 1.8 m children and 1.1 m mothers are acutely
malnourished.
• 4 m IDPS/returnees (10% of the population)
• 2 m children out of school
• 8 m lost jobs and livelihoods sources, the main causes of food insecurity
• Yemen social fabric has been affected and Yemen has just been named most
fragile nation in the Fund For Peace's 2019 Fragile States Index
4. Introduction to SFD
• Established in 1997 to contribute to poverty reduction and
reinforce Yemen social safety net
• The only national Social Protection& development player that
continued during the conflict (History of neutrality and impact)
• SFD’s approach to the ongoing crisis through supporting Yemenis to
meet their immediate needs as well as long-term development
• Offering multi-sectoral social protection-development response
through : (i) Social Safety Net interventions, Community and Local
Development and (ii)Small & Microenterprises Support
5. SFD response to the crisis

• 200 K households have been supported
with average wage transfer of $500. These
employment built/rehabilitated wash
infrastructure, roads pavement,
agricultural terraces, home gardens ..
• 11,000 youths were provided employment
for up to 13 months with transfer amount
between $900-1200 per person to provide
social services in nutrition, education and
community mobilization,
• 88 K impoverished mothers received cash
transfer for nutrition, more info to follow

• 20.9k farmers, fishers and micro businesses
supported with grants and technical knowledge.
17.5k are in agriculture
• Supporting resilience of 10 MFIs with a portfolio
of more than 85K active borrowers. SFD has
also provided recovery grants for about 4000
SMEs clients
• SFD has been the only actor empowering rural
communities to organize themselves to plan &
implement self-help initiatives. SFD has
supported the creation of 3000 effective
community based organization that has
implemented more than 10K community based

• Initiated in 2014 as a pilot to target 5,000
households in 3 districts in Al-Hodiedah
• Suspended in 2015 and resumed in 2016 by
World Bank supported project the ECRP
• Scaled up to 21 districts in 6 governorates
with high malnutrition prevalence, taking
into consideration regional balance: South
and North
• Transfer has been increased from 9000+ per
household quarterly in 2014 to monthly YR
10K in 2016 to YR 20K in 2017 to respond to
the depreciation of the YR and the increase
of food prices.
