The central bank of Zimbabwe scrapped
the country's national currency on Friday
and started using the U.S. dollar. The
Zimbabwean dollar has for the past
decade become more and more
worthless because of spiraling inflation.
Hyperinflation peaked at an incredible
500 billion per cent in 2008. Since then,
Zimbabweans began seeking financial
security in the U.S. dollar. Economists
estimate that today, 90 per cent of the
economy is based on the U.S. dollar.
People have until September to exchange
their remaining local currency for the U.S.
dollar. The official exchange rate is one
U.S. dollar to 35 quadrillion Zimbabwean
dollars. That's 35 followed by 15 zeroes.

India is the latest country to cast doubt
on the U.S. dollar as the major global
currency. Suresh Tendulkar, a top
government economist, has advised India
to rely less on the dollar. He suggests
buying a number of different currencies
instead of just the greenback. He told
reporters: “The major part of Indian
reserves is in dollars. That is something
that’s a problem for us.” India’s treasury
holds over $260 billion in foreign
currency reserves. A weaker dollar means
those reserves could fall in value. This is
especially possible with the pressure on
the dollar from America’s weakening
economy. This may not exactly be the
final nail in the coffin for the dollar, but it
seems to be losing ground on other
currencies. (continued)

There is bad news for students who use
their mobile phones in class. New research
shows that students do not learn very well
when they text and use social media in
class. The research looks at the effects of
texting and social media on student
learning. Researchers looked at 145
American university students in the
classroom. Some of the students used their
mobile phones in class, while the others
had their phones switched off. The
students who did not use their mobile
phones during the class got higher scores
on tests they took at the end of the class.
One of the biggest challenges teachers
have in the classroom is the battle to keep
students working. Many students feel they
need to be online and checking messages,
even when they had work to do in class.
The researchers said it is common for
students to be physically present in class,
but mentally absent because they are using
their mobiles. Many teachers are fighting a
"losing battle" because students are more
interested in social media than classwork.
Research in England found that test scores
went up by six per cent after mobile
phones were banned in class.

Last year, I went on a trip to Singapore and
I had to exchange my local currency to
Singapore dollars. I was weighing up which
place would be best to change currency.
Should I change it at the airport or at a
bank? Some of my friends suggested that
changing the money at a bank in my own
country first would provide the best rate of
exchange. I decided that I should do that
but on the day of departure I had
completely forgotten to change my money.
I ended up having to change money at the
airport in Singapore and so the exchange
rate was slightly worse.
In Singapore, I noticed how much more
expensive everything was. Even a cup of
coffee was double that I would pay in the
Philippines. I had to be frugal with how I
spent my money. Fortunately, the food was
relatively cheap especially if I ate at the
roadside stalls as oppose to in a restaurant.
At the end of my trip I wanted to get some
souvenirs for my friends back in the
Philippines. ( continued )
