Preface To The Report
Industrial attachment is a part of our B.Sc Engineering course. In this period we observed and
learned many things that increased our knowledge. In this report we tried our best to focus on
those things that we have done and learn during this period.
These report focuses on two works those were given to us to do and also an overview on
Novartis and Novartis Bangladesh Limited and commercial activities such as Human Resource,
Supply Chain Management etc are also discussed.
Technical activities are the main part of the report. Since we are engineering students, our main
purpose was to learn about technical operations and this allocates most of the portions of this
report.
Purpose In-Plant Training
The in-plant training is necessary for the following reasons:
 To involve with the practical application of knowledge that was achieved day by day and
get familiar with the theoretical and practical one.
 To clear all the discrepancies of theoretical knowledge.
 To visualize the actual conditions and problems those arise during application of any
system.
 To make familiar with allied working activities of an industry besides own field of activity
such as administration, management etc.

Introduction to Novartis:
Novartis is a world leader in offering medicines to protect health, treat diseases and improve well
bring. Its goal is to discover, develop and successfully market innovative products to treat patients,
ease sufferings and enhance the quality of life. Novartis is the only company with leadership
positions in both patented and general pharmaceuticals (Sandoz). Headquarter in Basel,
Switzerland , Novartis group companies employ more than 100,000 people and operate in over
140 countries around the world.
It’s Glorious History:
On 7th march, 1996 an earthshaking announcement was made to business world, Sandoz and ciba-
geigy , the two swiss-based chemical/life science giants, had agree to become one. Novartis, as the
new company was called, was at that time the result of largest corporate merger in history. Both
Sandoz and Ciba-geigy already had a rich history of their own.
Geigy, Ciba, Sandoz (1758-1970):
First there was three companies, Geigy, Ciba and Sandoz: Geigy whose history goes back to the
middle of 18th century, Ciba founded around 1860, and Sandoz which is setup in 1886.
Ciba-Geigy and Sandoz (1970-1996):
In 1970 Geigy and Ciba merged the newly created Ciba-Geigy Ltd. And Sandoz continued to
follow separate paths for two and a half decades.
Novartis (1996-present):
In 1996 Sandoz and Ciba joined to form Novartis in one of the largest mergers in the history. Since
then Novartis has marked by many interesting events and success stories.
Novartis (Bangladesh) limited
Novartis (Bangladesh) limited (NBL), a joint venture public limited company with equity
participation of 60% Novartis International AG. , Switzerland & 40% Bangladesh chemical
industries Corp. (BCIC). Novartis (Bangladesh) limited was registered in July 1973 as Ciba-Geigy
(Bangladesh) limited and subsequently in February 1997 as Novartis (Bangladesh) limited
following merger of Ciba and Sandoz.
Novartis (Bangladesh) Limited has manufacturing and marketing operation in Bangladesh. Since
1973 in areas of patented Pharmaceuticals, off patent Branded generic (Sandoz), and OTC
Pharmaceuticals, along with animal health. It was being the leading Pharmaceuticals exporter in
industry since 1996 and has received the National Export Trophy-Gold, for the years (2002-2003
and 2003-2004). In 2007 it posted the highest export figure in the industry once again an exceeded
its closest competitors by more than 5 in terms of net worth.
Project Work :
The project which was done at Novartis Bangladesh Limited is spare parts inventory
management . Inventory management is the overseeing and controlling of the ordering, storage
and use of components that a company will use in the production of the items it will sell as well
as the overseeing and controlling of quantities of finished products for sale. A business's
inventory is one of its major assets and represents an investment that is tied up until the item is
sold or used in the production of an item that is sold. It also costs money to store, track and
insure inventory.
Inventories that are mismanaged can create significant financial problems for a business, whether
the mismanagement results in an inventory glut or an inventory shortage. Though inventory word
covers a large area , we works only on inventory of spare parts of the machines used for the
manufacturing of the pharmaceutical products of Novartis Bangladesh .
The main function of that inventory is :
1. To meet anticipated customer demand .
2. To smooth production requirements.
3. To decouple operations .
4. To protect against stock outs.
5. To take advantage of order cycle .
6. To hedge against price increase .
7. To permit operations .
In this work we have to face some problem to classify the stock according to A-B-C approach .
The A-B-C approach classifies inventory items according to some measure of importance
,usually annual dollar value (i.e., Dollar value per unit multiplied by annual usage rate ) ,and then
allocates control efforts accordingly . Typically ,three classes of items are used : A (very important
) , B (moderately important ) and C (least important ) . However the actual number of categories
may vary from organization to organization depending on the extent to which a firm want to
differentiate control effort.
Managers use ABC concept in many different settings to improve operations. One key use occurs
in customer’s service, Where a manager can focus attention on the most important aspects of
customer service by categorizing different aspects as very important, important, or of only minor
importance. The point is to not overemphasize minor aspects of customer service at the expense
of major aspects.
Another application of the A-B-Cconcept is as a guide to cycle counting, which is a physical count
of items in inventory.
Actually all of those are done to make SOP . A standard operating procedure, or SOP, is a set of
step-by-step instructions created by a business to help workers carry out routine operations. Their
purpose is to achieve efficiency, quality output and uniformity of performance, while reducing
miscommunication and failure to comply to industry regulations.
An important aspect of any quality system is to work according to clear-cut Standard Operating
Procedures (SOPs). An SOP is a policy and procedure document which describes the regular
recurring activities appropriate to quality operations. If it is Critical To Quality (CTQ) than it is a
candidate for a standard operating procedure. Consistency is the goal or purpose of an SOP, to
carry out all operations correctly and always in the same manner.
Workers who are following established procedures have more confidence that their actions are
supported by management, the underlying statutes or regulations, and that they are following
industry best practices. Using standard operating procedures regularly leads to fewer corrective
actions. If there are legal ramifications to your work, then following your procedures reduces
liabilities.
Some SOPs may have a two-tiered system that includes both procedures and Work Instructions.
Your procedures provide a general view of the higher level steps, whereas Work Instructions are
significantly more detailed.
One advantage of a two-tiered system is that SOPs change less often, whereas work instructions
may need to be changed or updated more frequently due to changes in organizational structure,
equipment, or application software.
Working in accordance with well-defined Standard Operating Procedures is an important aspect
of any quality management system. Your policies and procedures documents are written for
Critical To Quality (CTQ) elements within your business with the aim of consistency as the goal.
When writing SOPS, you may have a two-tiered system that includes procedures of the higher
level steps and Work Instructions with more details.
Health Safety And Environment (HSE) Department :
To minimize the risk of hazard Novartis Bangladesh has a health, safety & environment
department. This provides the safety for both human and wealth. Normally safety means,
prevention from all unwanted or unintentional harm.
Hazard means source of any kind of harm. Hazard can be,
 Task associated hazard
 Location related hazard
 Material related hazard

Workers who are following established procedures have more confidence that their actions are supported by management, the underlying statutes or regulations, and that they are following industry best practices. Using standard operating procedures regularly leads to fewer corrective actions. If there are legal ramifications to your work, then following your procedures reduces liabilities. Some SOPs may have a two-tiered system that includes both procedures and Work Instructions. Your procedures provide a general view of the higher level steps, whereas Work Instructions are significantly more detailed. One advantage of a two-tiered system is that SOPs change less often, whereas work instructions may need to be changed or updated more frequently due to changes in organizational structure, equipment, or application software. Working in accordance with well-defined Standard Operating Procedures is an important aspect of any quality management system. Your policies and procedures documents are written for Critical To Quality (CTQ) elements within your business with the aim of consistency as the goal. When writing SOPS, you may have a two-tiered system that includes procedures of the higher level steps and Work Instructions with more details.
