Notas do Editor
Maslow (1954) attempted to synthesize a large body of research related to human motivation. Prior to Maslow, researchers generally focused separately on such factors as biology, achievement, or power to explain what energizes, directs, and sustains human behavior. Maslow posited a hierarchy of human needs based on two groupings: deficiency needs and growth needs. Within the deficiency needs, each lower need must be met before moving to the next higher level. Once each of these needs has been satisfied, if at some future time a deficiency is detected, the individual will act to remove the deficiency. The deficiency needs are: Physiological, Safety/security, Belonginess and Love, Esteem. If and only if the deficiency needs are met is the individual ready to act upon the growth needs.
Good place to discuss the Donner Party of the 1846-47 who attempted to cross to California in the late autumn only to become trapped by snow in the passes. 86 people went in and less that 50 walked out. They first shared food with others and when food became scarce, they resorted to keeping what they had to the immediate families. Social structure broke down and people dropped down the lowest of basic needs. They resorted to eating the dead and became very quiet and independent of one another. Their only thoughts were of food and water. They survived in cabins and in some cases snow igloos (shelter needs)?
Good thing to discuss is ask if anyone has ever been lost in the woods? Were they hunger? Why not? After they were lost for a while, did they start to think more of food and less of shelter? Another good example is to say you will hold cadet xxx’s head under water. Will cadet xxx be thinking about his latest date or his next movie he wants to see or is he thinking basic needs like air? Is he thinking of food? After he “escapes” from your gripe at school, where will he run to? Other high schoolers? (shelter/safety needs). Bring out the fact that cadets and students should feel safe at school due to rules and regulations in place...
We are talking love and belonging, friendship (not necessarily sex)
NJROTC jobs and responsibilities are good to discuss here.
Normally, we are discussing adults such as Bill Gates is a good example. Here is a guy who has everything but needs to accomplish more for his own justification and satisfaction.
