Telecom operators oppose Microsoft’s entry into white spaces
Telecom operators are vehemently opposing Microsoft’s plan to take internet to the country's villages by
leveraging tiny gaps left unused between television broadcast frequencies. The companies fear the
possibility of Microsoft getting free access to this spectrum, known as white spaces, which might lead to a
monopoly. According to the operators, the white spaces are a valuable national asset and they are also
interested in it. The Cellular Operators Association of India (COAI) will write to the Telecom ministry with
a demand to auction the spectrum, instead of its allocation to one company. The first phase of
Microsoft’s white space technology testing was carried out in Andhra Pradesh. White space airwaves lie
in the 470-698 MHz range and can take radio signals to much greater distances than conventional mobile
bands.

from the Foxconn plant to a standalone one in the same Sri City area. The standalone plant will be
operational with five assembly lines in mid-November and will have a production capacity of half a million
devices a month.
Telecom companies ordered to compensate dropped calls
The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) has announced a regulation according to which telecom
operators will need to compensate users INR 1 per call drop. However, the compensation will not be for
more than 3 calls in a single day. The regulation which will come into effect shortly, was issued to ensure
strict compliance by telecom companies. According to a TRAI report, the problem of call drop has almost
doubled during peak hours in the last one year.
