3. What is Lattice
Multiplication?
Lattice multiplication is a method of
multiplying large numbers using a grid. This
method breaks the multiplication process
into smaller steps; which for some, makes it
easier.
4. Setting up the Lattice
First draw a grid that has as many rows and columns
as the multiplicand and the multiplier.
The grid below shows multiplying a 2-digit number by a 2-digit
number.

6. Multiplicand vs. Multiplier
What is a Multiplicand?
A multiplicand is the
number that is or is to be
multiplied by another
number.
What is a Multiplier?
A multiplier is the number
by which another number
is multiplied
For example: in 35 × 10,
the multiplicand is 35 and
the multiplier is 10.
8. Where to place the
Multiplicand and Multiplier
Example: 35 × 10
Multiplicand
3 5

Multiplier

9. Setting up the Lattice
Draw a diagonal line
Ten through each box from
the upper right corner
to the lower left
s corner.
This gives us a spot
Ones for the tens place and
a spot for the ones
place.
