as textbook reading.
READING FOR ENGLISH LEARNERS
• Most of you don’t do enough of it!
• PLEASURE READING is just as important
as textbook reading.
• If you have trouble reading a book for fun,
you definitely will not be able to read a
textbook in your degree program.
READING FOR ENGLISH LEARNERS
• FACT: A large number of ELPP students
have had difficulty with the reading section
of their exams. However, students who
did lots of PLEASURE READING did not
have this problem.
SELECTING A BOOK FOR READING
• For pleasure reading, you should choose a
book that you can read COMFORTABLY,
without a dictionary.

• This is how you build READING
FLUENCY.
SELECTING A BOOK FOR READING
• Most books for native speakers use about
10,000 different English words. Most of
you don’t know this many. Therefore,
these are not good for English learners
(a.k.a. ELPP students).

• I suggest you use GRADED READERS,
which are books specifically made for
learners.
SELECTING A BOOK FOR READING
• GRADED READERS are written for
different levels. The vocabulary is easier to
understand. The sentences are written a
bit more simply. The grammar is more
straightforward.
ACTIVITY TIME!
• Take a look at the graded readers on the
shelves for your level.
• Choose one that looks interesting to you.
ACTIVITY TIME!
• Find the LEVEL of the book. It may be
written on the front cover, it may be written on
the back cover, it may be written on the
spine, or it may be written inside the book. It
may be a letter (S), it may be a number (1- 6)
or it may be a word (Intermediate).
• Does this book look interesting to you?
• Will you be able to read it without a
dictionary?
IN CLASS
• Every week, you will come down to
English Club to choose a book.
• Then you will read for 10 minutes, have a
5 minute break, then repeat until the end.
• When you finish your book, you should
take another one.
IN CLASS
• Your PURPOSE is to read in 10 minute
periods without stopping.
• Your TARGET is to read up to 10 books
this term.
• When you read, DON’T STOP. Put your
phone away. Don’t use your dictionary.
You can do it!
BORROWING
• To borrow a book, take it and your student ID card to
the library. You may also be able to borrow a CD to
listen to the book.
• You can have each book/CD for one week.
• You can also request extra time.
• If you are late, you will get an email reminder.
• DO NOT just take it from the English Club.
RETURNING
• To return your book, give it to the librarian.
• If the librarian is absent, place it in the ‘return
books’ slot in front of the librarian’s desk.
• DO NOT just put it back in the English Club.

  • 4. READING FOR ENGLISH LEARNERS • Most of you don’t do enough of it! • PLEASURE READING is just as important as textbook reading. • If you have trouble reading a book for fun, you definitely will not be able to read a textbook in your degree program.
  • 5. READING FOR ENGLISH LEARNERS • FACT: A large number of ELPP students have had difficulty with the reading section of their exams. However, students who did lots of PLEASURE READING did not have this problem.
  • 6. SELECTING A BOOK FOR READING • For pleasure reading, you should choose a book that you can read COMFORTABLY, without a dictionary.

  • 8. SELECTING A BOOK FOR READING • Most books for native speakers use about 10,000 different English words. Most of you don’t know this many. Therefore, these are not good for English learners (a.k.a. ELPP students).

Therefore, these are not good for English learners (a.k.a. ELPP students). • I suggest you use GRADED READERS, which are books specifically made for learners.
  • 10. SELECTING A BOOK FOR READING • GRADED READERS are written for different levels. The vocabulary is easier to understand. The sentences are written a bit more simply. The grammar is more straightforward.
  • 11. ACTIVITY TIME! • Take a look at the graded readers on the shelves for your level. • Choose one that looks interesting to you.
  • 12. ACTIVITY TIME! • Find the LEVEL of the book. It may be written on the front cover, it may be written on the back cover, it may be written on the spine, or it may be written inside the book. It may be a letter (S), it may be a number (1- 6) or it may be a word (Intermediate). • Does this book look interesting to you? • Will you be able to read it without a dictionary?

  • 14. IN CLASS • Every week, you will come down to English Club to choose a book. • Then you will read for 10 minutes, have a 5 minute break, then repeat until the end. • When you finish your book, you should take another one.
  • 15. IN CLASS • Your PURPOSE is to read in 10 minute periods without stopping. • Your TARGET is to read up to 10 books this term. • When you read, DON’T STOP. Put your phone away. Don’t use your dictionary. You can do it!
  • 16. BORROWING • To borrow a book, take it and your student ID card to the library. You may also be able to borrow a CD to listen to the book. • You can have each book/CD for one week. • You can also request extra time. • If you are late, you will get an email reminder. • DO NOT just take it from the English Club.
  • 17. RETURNING • To return your book, give it to the librarian. • If the librarian is absent, place it in the ‘return books’ slot in front of the librarian’s desk. • DO NOT just put it back in the English Club.
