GROWING GOVERNANCE
Business models for producing and transforming food more
sustainably in cities - in gardens, in parks, on derelict lands,
on rooftops, on balconies, etc.

5. Rooftop garden experimentation…
New forms of both intensive/qualitative urban agriculture
Vegetable growing in bags experimented on the Royal library rooftop: an educational and awareness raising
project on a famous building in the centre of Brussels with views to stimulate systematic terrace gardening and
more production-oriented developments…
6. Aquaponics experimentation…
New forms of both intensive/qualitative urban agriculture
Aquaponics is the marriage of aquaculture (fish farming) and hydroponics (growing vegetables without soil). In
June 2012, the "Village partner" in partnership with Group One developed a pilot scale aquaponics unit. Its
purpose is to act as a catalyst project and test a series of economic parameters.
7. “Indoor farming”
New forms of both intensive/qualitative urban agriculture
Indoor production involves producing throughout the year in a short-chain production-distribution approach, with
production intended for consumption onsite (at catered events) or in the region. The “close the loop” approach
is sought for all the technical aspects related to flows of materials and energy.
An Indoor Farming Toolbox has been produced with a map of opportunities for the region, potential spatial
configurations and related business model in order to motivate a maximum number of businesses to work
together on a project of this type in order to illustrate a range of innovative solutions in the region.
8. Suggested question for dicussion at tables…
How can cities handle the conflict between
urban densification and maintenance of
growing spaces?
9. Lyon's involvement in a regional and multilevel
agricultural policy (PSADER-PENAP)
short speech from Lilian Pellegrino
10. St Louis' study on job creation in urban
agriculture and food, Brussels
Urban agriculture: work intensive activities > opportunity
to create less-qualified jobs that are missing in cities…
11. Recovering traditional style and food production in Seixalbo …
Urban agriculture: work intensive activities > opportunity
to create less-qualified jobs that are missing in cities…
12. Eleonas’ urban farm...
B1: before
B1: after
Crisis and increases of food poverty > increase 'citizens
food resilience'
14. New market gardening farmer, Vaslui…
New value creation models and profitable businesses…
15. Faro DOC from the school, Messina…
New value creation models and profitable businesses…
16. Suggested question for dicussion at tables…
what is the potential of creating profitable
companies and securing self-supporting jobs
in urban agriculture? ?
17. Beyond rationality of urban food production, a symbolic
form of reengagement after decades of agroindustry/disengagement of the population
25. Organizing a reclaiming land platform…
Stadsnära odling community gardens platform, Gothenburg…
26. Suggested question for dicussion at tables…
How can cities stimulate (re)engagement of
citizens in growing (i.e. window gardening;
private garden; community gardens…)?
27. Urban Garden Soil Pollution by City of Lyon
Emerging drawbacks:
Soil and air pollution in cities…
The city of Lyon implements prevention and proactive policies about garden soil pollution and define a process
including: free soil diagnostic for community gardens and allotments; information to all members of those
“contaminated” gardens to avoid health risks: selected food to grow, best practices, etc.; topsoil replacement
and cleaning of the removed topsoil in specialized areas; phytoremediation experimentation (soil
decontamination process based on plants).
