• Produce a short presentation / argument / poster to
include: causes of the migration, geographical
factors, comparing viewpoints, how migration is
managed at present, which scenario is most
sustainable to manage this migration change long
term.
You have 3 scenarios to choose from for decision:
• a) Situation remains the same. USA to allow same
quota each year
• b) Cut all legal migration into USA from Mexico for 1
year
• c) Increase migration quota from Mexico for skilled
workers only. Reduce unskilled migration.
3. 16 mark SDME essay
Scenario:
In 2013, the US government was under increasing pressure from the local population to
reduce immigration from Mexico to the USA.
More than 11% of Mexico’s native population lives abroad, making it the country with the
most emigrants in the world. 143’000 Mexican migrants were issued legal immigrant visas /
green cards to the USA in 2012. A total of 1million green cards were issued in the USA to
any foreigners in 2012.
However, tensions exist and the national government must consider the most sustainable
solution.
Task:
Consider and choose which option you think would be the most sustainable way to manage
migration into the USA. In your answer you should:
- State your chosen option
- Explain why you think your option is more sustainable than each of the other options
- Explain any disadvantages of your chosen option
- Consider different stakeholder points of view on the subject
