An overview of Augmented Reality (AR) and specific examples from some of my projects as well as work in this area by others. I show how Augmented Reality can and how YOU CAN enhance the learning experience. The theoretical framework builds on the work of Lave & Wenger "Situated Cognition" (http://tinyurl.com/ouh24mm) and Brown & Duguid Tools demonstrated: Microsoft Halolens (due out in 2016), Aurasma, Sketchup, Zooburst and more.

5. Theoretical Foundations of AR
The level of the learning is dependent upon the quality of the
social interaction within the learning context (Bandura, 1977;
Vygotsky, 1978)
Spector, J. M. et al. (eds.). (2014) Handbook of Research on
Educational Communications and Technology. Springer Science +
Business Media,New York
Situated Learning Theory posits that all learning takes place within
a specific context and the QUALITY of the learning is a result of
the INTERACTIONS among people, places, objects,
processes, and culture (Brown, Collins, & Duguid, 1989)

6. What does the Latest
research say?
• AR is a “Visualization Technology”
• AR is an “Emerging technology
• “Enhanced Reality” and not a “Virtual Reality”

8. AR is Hyper-Contextual
• Informal Learning environments
• Mobile Learning
• Constructivist Learning Theory
• Participatory – Experiential Learning

23. To launch the Aura:
(1) Open the Aurasma app on your phone or tablet and log in using the
same username and password as your Aurasma Studio account.
(2) Go to the "Auras" tab within the "Explore" section and drag the page
downward to refresh the Auras.
(3) Select the app's viewfinder and point your device at the Trigger image
below to preview your Aura.

25. Big Takeaways
The focus is and should always be the LEARNING
and NOT the eye-candy quotient.
AR can and does enhance learning.
AR is not expensive.
AR does NOT have a steep learning curve for
adoption
of this emerging technology.

The way in which we use technology to enhance our daily lives seems bound to a two dimensional screen. eLearners are always up to date in terms of the way in which we consume information; but what if you were able to display digital artifacts on the world around us? What if the “one size fits all” digital learning courses could be tailored to an individual?
Project based learning in a multi-age classroom. Instead of K-1 being book buddies with their 4th-5th grade counterparts, they became “e-Book buddies.”
Collaboration, connection, communication, construction = 4 C Framework Parents/students were involved because of the portability.
And very little teaching….just facilitating learning!
