At the EIIL we recognise two
extremes on a continuum of learning
styles.
• We know that much workplace learning is
achieved through experience ‘on the job’
• Often with the experiences being offered
to us by a Manager to ensure we are
exposed to those of a certain type, finding
out ‘the way we do things around here’.
• A guide or Mentor is sometimes assigned
to help us reflect on our experiences;
review and embed the learning from each.
• At the other end of the continuum is the
lecture-based learning style we’re familiar
with from school or university.
• If we remember the ‘correct’ answers
from the lecture material, and we recite
these accurately at exam time, we get
high grades.

Between the two extremes are a
variety of different learning styles
• At business school (or on degree courses
with extensive laboratory work) there is an
element of practical work to supplement
the lectures.
• The case study methodology provides a
simulation of real life analysis, but even
here it is possible to see through the
padding to the key information which can
then be presented in the ‘correct’ way to
demonstrate that you understood the
lectures.

Between the two extremes are a
variety of different learning styles
• Once in the workplace, Consultants are
engaged to provide in-company workshops
where lecture input is supplemented by
group exercises to illustrate key messages.
• No exams perhaps, and maybe even room
for interpretation, but participants will still
leave workshops with a good
understanding (or at least a book!) of the
‘correct’ approach or solution which has
been agreed beforehand with the
companies Training & Development
manager.

The EIIL Masterclasss fits between
On-The-Job experience and normal
Executive Development
Programmes.
• International and conducted in English,
each (two-day) workshop focuses on
one leadership theme.
• Coaches assign teams a high level task
• There’s an introduction with a
‘positioning input’ or a ‘disclosure’
exercise to provide participants with a
common language
• Then 4 or 5 observed interviews with
selected experts from EIIL Network
• Facilitated interview reviews with
‘lecturettes’ by our coaches to clarify key
content concepts, and to develop team’s
interviewing process techniques
• Finally a summary of learning is captured
by each team in the form of a set of
guidelines on the workshop theme.

The EIIL Masterclass is not for
everyone. Some people (and this can
be culture-dependent) prefer to get
the book, listen to the lectures, and
enjoy the fun during the exercises.
But for those who are prepared to
work to extract great anecdotes
from experienced practitioners, and
to distil their own learning from
these and compare them with the
next senior’s experience; who are
prepared to rapidly build a real team,
and encourage them through
uncertainty towards a consensus of
high quality opinion, with little
reassurance that they have found
the ‘correct’ solution, we’ve found
the learning is huge, and on many
levels.

‘….the real benefit is learning to work in
uncertainty‘
Ralph Herbst, Bayer TechnologyServices
‘The concept is different from anything
I've experienced elsewhere. In meeting
people from different companies from
across Europe it forced me to think
about how other people do business and
how different people and cultures
approach the same problem .‘
Arjen Schulpen, Shell
‘This methodology is very practical and
immediate – it is not formulaic learning
from books, but comes across as good
business practice backed up by solid
experience.’
Jon Chambers, P&G
