This presentation provides some tips for finding teaching resources available at the Harris Learning Library (HLL). This Slideshare shows how to borrow diverse material and access online resources specifically for education but may be useful in other fields as well. HLL serves Nipissing University, Canadore College, the surrounding communities, and the general public.

9. To access an E-book, select the Available Online link.
E-books are available to current students, staff & faculty
with your WebAdvisor or Network login credentials.

10. To find books on teaching a topic...
Add “and teaching” to your search
Or try more specific terms such as “lesson plans”, “lesson planning”, etc.

add “and juvenile”

13. To find a storybook or nonfiction book related to a
topic at a young person’s reading level…

16. Finding books in the Search
for a particular age or grade level
can be a challenge!
Most catalogue records
- other than those for textbooks -
do not provide this information.

17. Some Search records use broader terms such as
primary, elementary, secondary OR middle school.

18. For most Library materials,
you will have to judge for yourself
what age or grade level
they are suitable for.

is another useful tool
for finding fiction and
nonfiction picture
books for children.

20. Finding Textbooks

21. The word “textbook” is not generally
used in catalogue records,
so doesn’t work well as a search term.

22. Find titles of approved textbooks…

23. …then look them up in the OMNI search.
Textbooks are interfiled with the rest of the
Library collection according to subject.
