Biodiversity refers to the variety of life on Earth, including the interdependence between all living things from microscopic algae and mites to the millions of identified plant and animal species. There are three components of biodiversity: genetic diversity within species, diversity of species, and diversity of ecosystems. Biodiversity has intrinsic value as a natural part of the world as well as utilitarian value by providing humans with goods, services, information, oxygen, food, clean water, medicine, and aesthetics. The document expresses concern about threats to biodiversity like habitat destruction, pollution, species introductions, climate change, and exploitation which are causing species extinction at an alarming rate.
