3. Subcommittee Roles & Responsibilities
The Calendar Subcommittee is responsible for:
• planning the 2014-2015 DVISD Calendar
• meeting regularly with subcommittee
• preparing 3 viable calendar options
• presenting calendar options to DAT committee
members and other constituents

4. Process for Selecting Calendar
Planning Phase
During the planning phase, the Calendar Subcommittee will:
• review calendars from other districts
• review previous Del Valle ISD calendars
• review state waivers and TEA mandates, such as protecting
the number of student instructional days prepare 3
calendar options

5. Process for Selecting Calendar Con’t.
Selection Phase
During the selection phase, the Calendar Subcommittee will:
• create an electronic survey for district staff, parents, and community members to
vote for their preferred calendar option
• summarize the results of the public survey
• present the 3 calendar options and survey results to the District Advisory Team
• have the DAT members vote for their preferred calendar option
• summarize the results of the DAT member’s ballots
• consider all input in developing the recommended option that goes to the Board
of Trustees
• present the 2014-2015 Del Valle ISD Calendar to the Board of Trustees

6. Timeline
November 2013 – December 2013 (Planning Phase)
• Committee will meet to begin planning phase.
December 2013 – January 2013 (Selection Phase)
Tuesday, December 10th - Tuesday, December 17th (Public Voting Time Period)
• District staff, parents, and community members will be invited to review the
three options; vote for their preferred option via electronic survey; and
submit comments, questions and concerns about the three calendar options.
January 13th – (DAT Meeting)
• The Calendar Subcommittee will present the 3 options and survey results to
the DAT members.
• The DAT members will review the survey results and vote for their preferred
calendar option.
January 21st – (School Board Meeting)
• The recommended 2014-2015 Del Valle ISD Calendar option will go before
the Board of Trustees

7. Guiding Principles
1.
We believe in maximizing the number of student instructional days
(keep 178 days to protect instructional time)
2.
We value the opportunity to provide ongoing quality professional development
for our teachers through early release days while still protecting instructional
days
3.
We value making decisions for holidays, including spring break, that supports our
faculty, staff, student attendance
4.
We believe in balancing the curriculum into two even semesters
5.
We believe that our faculty, staff, parents, and community should have the
option to vote on calendar choices
6.
We believe in supporting new teachers with adequate and sufficient professional
development before the first instructional day and throughout the school year

8. Calendar Creation Rules & Regulations
First Day of School- Students may not start
school prior to the 4th Monday of August.
Instructional Days – Students are required to
have 180 instructional days.
• Districts may request a waiver for up to 5 days in the
school calendar year for staff development.
• Students in Del Valle ISD had 177 instructional days in
2013-2014.
• There were three staff development days.
187 day contract year- 180 days must be allocated during the
school calendar year. Seven days may be allocated before
and/or after the school calendar year.

9. Calendar Creation Rules & Regulations Con’t.
Early Release days- The 2013-2014 calendar had 3 early release
days. A district may not have more than six.
• These days may provide additional training in education
methodologies and /or to provide time to meet the needs
of student and local communities.
• Districts and charter schools may shorten the student
instructional day to release school: to conduct
teacher collaboration or planning, to conduct
teacher parent conferences, release prior to
a holiday, game playoff or local school related
activities.

10. Calendar Creation Rules & Regulations Con’t.
Staff Development – General
This expedited waiver allows the district and charter schools to train staff
on various educational strategies designed to improve student
performance in lieu of a maximum of three days of student instruction.
Districts and charter schools may request up to a maximum of three days
for general staff development in lieu of student instruction.
Staff Development - Subject Areas
This expedited waiver allows the district and charter schools to request up
to two days to conduct additional staff training for reading/
language arts, mathematics, science and/or social studies
training one day per subject in lieu of student instruction for
two days.
