Thanks for this opportunity.
Going to show a proposal which is not exactly meets the criteria as artistic research
However, shares some elements that go through Art Based Research
Follows my interest as both Arts and education worker
As context I will bring a previous research from which many elements arised
Both research topics and issues
Final masters proyect
Analize a Residency program focused on arts+education activities
Issues communicating the purpose and objectives
Deal with the genius artists myth
In this inquiry I focused on who participated (artists, institutions, team, audience
Time frame for the activities and program
Where the activities took place
AIR programs are Formative programs. Most studies have problems identifying clear learning outcomes, but artists agree on its value
Take a minute to look under your chair for a piece of paper and a color pencil
Draw a circle in the center and write the title of your last learning experience (a project, an internship, a university program)
Then trace three things you gained through participating in there.
The first that come to your mind
Keep it for a moment
Case study. Narrative perspective
Allowed me to flow through different aspects or scenes of residency life
Used direct observation/ fieldnotes / visits to artists studies /interviews / mapping / photo and video documentation
Through all the process I was accompained by tutors from both the university and the Residency team.
Mapping allowed me to identify dynamics, when translating interviews into interaction through space
Invisible places as the kitchen, corridors, patio, windows
But mapping, was not just a way of documenting but analyzing and interpreting the topics and elements that emerged from observation, visits and interviews
Also a way to get a sense of missing or ghost elements
A sense of “fuera de campo”
An example of this off field was the presence/absence of people
Please lets go back to your piece of paper
¿How many of you wrote something you learned? (a process, a technic, a concept, a method)
¿How many wrote something you achived? (a title, an raise, another job, a new project)
¿How many of you mentioned a person? (a new connetcion, a partner,?
Well, part of the things we get through learning experiences go through the people we meet
Artists expect to meet people through residencies (mostly curators)
But from this research there was a permanent oblivion of neighbors and collaborators.
They didn’t emerged through interviews alone, but by the experience of visiting the studio or observing artists work
Then collaboration, partnerships and even friendships became evident
This made me think of a dimension I explored superficially. How artists manage this ambiguity and
Challenge to embody artistic and educational roles through this programs
Through research it was also a recurring topic that when they had to explain the process to me they gained also new understandings
