ABSTRACTION:
SUFFERING – refers to an
experience of unpleasantness,
discomfort, and pain.
- Often associated with treats
to human existence or the lack
of pleasure or happiness in life.
MENTAL SUFFERING –
associated with emotional and
mental states such as
depression, anxiety, fear,
loneliness, and grief.
PHYSICAL SUFFERING – physical

hunger, distress, and pain.
Mga nag aaral ng mabute
These may be caused by
unexpected situations in life
such as sudden changes in
lifestyle, loss of employment,
stressful situations, and grief
caused by the death of a loved
one.
Suffering can also be caused by
the conflict between one’s
notion of a “perfect world” and
actual state of the world he or
she lives in, leading to the
feelings of anxiety, uncertainty,
and dead.
Philosophers views:
Weltschmerz a term used to refer
to man’s realization that the world
cab never live up to the ideal,
“Perfect World”, resulting to the
feeling of sadness or apathy.
Angst refers to the fear and anxiety,
and relate to the feeling to
existential dread – a crisis brought
about when a person begins to
question his or her purpose and
reason for being.
Ennui – the feeling of weariness and
discontent brought about by a lack
of interest or intense boredom with
the world.
What role does suffering play in
human life?
Two Major Philosophical views:
1. Consider suffering as an
undesirable human condition,
and that humans naturally seek
pleasure and avoid pain.
Proposed view of the world
controlled by chaotic forces that
bring about human suffering.
Arthur
Schopenhauer
Pessimistic view: believes that
human existence is characterized by
suffering caused by man’s inability
to meet his unlimited wants and
desires. Man is able to address the
chaos and suffering in the world by
focusing on aesthetics and morality.
Buddhist Philosophy - consider
suffering as a defining feature of
human existence.
The Four Noble Truth propose that
human suffering is caused by
desire, and will end through the
elimination of worldly desire.
Not all the time
silence means yes
because sometimes,
SILENCE means it
HURTS.
Hinduism Philosophy – believes that
suffering is closely tied to spiritual
progress and that all suffering ends
when a person attains
enlightenment.
2. Suffering is necessary to human
existence. Suffering is essential
because it defines human existence.
Without it, man is unable to grow
and improve, and his positive
experiences lose meaning and
significance.
Believes that
suffering is
inevitable, and
that man is meant
to suffer.
Certain form of suffering can be
beneficial and can result in personal
growth and development. At also a
test of a person’s worth.
George Sefler – life experiences
considers suffering as one of many
interrelated elements that define
the meaning of experiences
throughout life.
Naalala ko tuloy nung
umiyak ako sa tapat ni
papa tsaka ni kuya e
hayop na yan
HAHAHAHAHAHAHA
Suffering and happiness go hand-in-
hand in defining a person’s views on
his life’s experiences, and balance
between positive and negative
experiences will result in a well-
adjusted, functional person.
Theodicy – is philosophical branch
which tries to reconcile the
existence of a benevolent, all-good
God with the reality of suffering in
the world.
Suffering is a
consequence of free
will, and that it is
necessary to
achieve moral
protection.
Irenaeus of Lyons
Considers the world
as “a school and
hospitals for souls”
where suffering
plays a role in
educating and
healing the person.
Christian theology considers
suffering as a means to achieve a
higher meaning in life.
Christ’s suffering, in particular, is
considered highly significant to
God’s plan for humankind’s
salvation.
Just Smile🙂💖
