People's beliefs about whether social status is fixed or flexible can impact intergroup behavior. Those who see social status as flexible and open to change, known as a change belief system, are more likely to engage in cooperative behaviors that bring different groups together. In contrast, viewing social status as fixed and unchanging, called a social mobility belief system, tends to promote competitive behaviors between groups and the preservation of current social hierarchies.
