- Today,students must know how to use search engines, online databases, and other technologies. The only waystudents will learn how to use any technological tool is to be introduced to it, it should also be modeled, and then students should try to use it. Online learning helps students today find information easier. Then, students would have to go to the library and look up articles and books, but with todays technology students can access these sources easier. As stated from Lehmann & McLeod (2012), information is so much more accessible and students’ choices of sources have grown exponentially. - In order for effective searching to be done, one should first develop a question. Before researching and locating needed information in search engines and data bases, the topic should be narrowed down for research. Narrowing down research will eliminate the information that doesn’t contribute to the topic that is being searched.
- Today, students have greater access to primary source materials for research through using the internet. The traditional use of sources available in print and microfilm continues to be the foundation for research, but in some cases documents, letters, maps, photographs of ancient artifacts and other primary material are available online in different formats from free websites or subscription services on the internet. (ala.org, 2014). Students need to know what sources and search engines are appropriate to use when conducting their research. - These popular resources are great for effective online learning. These resources allow for gathering information through articles, journals, videos and news feeds. Students can use these resources to find articles that they would find in libraries to updated and present articles and feeds. - After finding sources and bookmarking those sources, it is important for the researcher to determine sites validity. Students should know that not all of the resources that they find on the internet is not all accurate. They should learn to check multiple sources to verify information and should look for cues to indicate the reliability of the site. Teaching about primary sources is essential so that students can reference the original source of information, rather than another author’s review of literature. Teaching students how to verify the validity of content is one of the most difficult and critical aspects of personal learning on the Web. This is good to know when using sources such as Wikipedia, blogs, and personal information sources. Finding current information is not a problem, but you need to examine when each tweet or post or document was written, and consider why it was written and by whom. - Keeping Track of Fluid Sources on the WebRSS feeds- Once signed up to a RSS feed, you can search for any topic of interests. RSS feeds keep people updated by sending daily emails on new and updated information on the topic(s) that were searched for. (Thiele, 2011). RSS feeds help consumers of information by allowing them to organize and update their favorite Web sites, blogs, and online journals. In terms of information management, it means that individuals do not have to visit each site to get updates.Wikis-Allow for people to create and publish their own pages. Wikis also allow for discussion with others. This is a great way to get others insight on a topic, and a great way to share your ideas and researched information. Learners have new strategies when it comes to effective online learning. A variety of new cloud based brainstorming, mind mapping, time lining, and storyboarding tools are available, creating rich opportunities for collaborating and sharing. - Contributing Content The final step in researching is creating a product to show what you have learned. Today, the tools on the Web (Google doc, wikis, slide presentation sites) make publishing content fast, easy, and free. These tools have made it possible for anyone to publish information easily so that people can learn from each other or help publishers improve their original work.
