2. It all began in 1957

3. Before 1957 computers only worked on one thing at a time, (called Batch Processing) this was slow and pretty ineffective

4. Programming meant a lot of manual work, there was no direct connection between computers and a lot of viruses were contracted

5. In 1957 a big change began, A remote connection had to be installed so that the developers could work directly on the computers

6. At the same time the idea of ‘time sharing’ came about, this meant we could share the processing power of one computer with multiple users

7. At this time knowledge was only transferred by people,

8. In 1958 the DARPA planned a large scale computer network to accelerate knowledge transfer and prevent repeating existing research

9. This network was called the ‘APARNET’

10. Three other concepts were then developed: Military, Commercial and Scientific network

11. These individual networks meant the government, scientific agencies, colleges etc could share processing power and exchange data

12. These networks were the foundations for our modern day internet

13. Next, regional networks were created , allowing for wider sharing and

14. Internet was created as a common language for all the networks to communicate with each other allowing all computers to communicate where ever they were on any network.

15. Telecoms companies made internet available to the public and businesses

16. In the 80’s the a lot of dot com companies were created to try and exploit the ‘promise of the internet’ but its use didn’t take off as quickly as predicted so most of these companies failed and people lost a lot of money.
