1. Organisation profile
Research Center on Information and Communication Technologies (CITIC) is a technology
center of the University of A Coruña (Spain) that promotes the advancement and excellence in
research, development and innovation on Information and Communications Technology (ICT)
and promotes the transfer of knowledge and results to society.
CITIC is a meeting point between the university and the company that combines R&D
departments of companies in the ICT sector with researchers from the university. Currently,
more than 250 researchers from public and private sectors are working in different R&D
projects, providing a mixed environment that enables university-industry collaboration and
knowledge transfer.
The units of CITIC are formed by two intelligent buildings (3.200m2) that are configurable for
R&D activities of our researchers, companies and employees.

The proposed objective is to recognize the software as a key factor for the competitiveness of
the industry and provide the tools and techniques to improve the ability to produce software
systems and services of quality in time and costs. In the process of software development and

5.1 Research Lines VARPA (Computer Vision and Pattern
Recognition; Digital Image Processing)
VARPA is the acronym of Visión Artificial y Reconocimiento de
Patrones (Computer Vision and Pattern Recognition; Digital Image
Processing), a research group inside the Department of Computer
Science of the University of A Coruña (UDC) , Spain. The members of
VARPA develop their teaching and research activities on Digital Image
Processing and computer vision research, development and applications.
The specific research lines at VARPA are:
 Retinal Image Analysis: One of the most active fields of work in the VARPA Group is
the ophthalmology, in particular the analysis of eye fundus images (retinal
images). The retinal image processing is a very interesting and demanding field, having
a lot of practical applications, such as the development of applications for massive
medical revision and the research in pharmacology effectiveness.
Currently, we are focused on the following topics:
 Drusen detection
 Red lession detection
 Automatic computation of the Arteriolar-to-Venular Ratio
 Biometrics: Retinal vessel tree is a suitable biometric pattern as it's unique for each
individual, it's very hard to forge and, unless some pathologies ar ise, it doesn't
change in time. VARPA group has developed an authentication system based on this
retinal vessel tree and we are currently working on the individual characterization
based on the feature extraction from the vessel tree. This will allow to build an easily
and more robust biometric pattern.
 Perceptual organization: Perceptual grouping refers to the human visual ability to
extract significant image relations from lower -level primitive image features
without any knowledge of the image content and group them to obtain meaningful
higher-level structure. Our experience in perceptual organization consists in the design
and implementation of a fully automatic framework for the detection of structured
objects in 2D images.
 Deformable Models: We have developed methodologies for both 2D and 3D
segmentation and reconstruction based on deformable models. We have
developed procedures to overcome some of the limitations of the classical deformable
models. Also, we have apply evolutionary techniques to the deformation
process.
The group promotes industrial development of computer vision applications and collaboration
with research in the same field. VARPA fundamental goals are innovation and industrial
competitiveness promotion based on computer vision research and development, and
collaboration with industry in technological projects development.

TELEMATICA is an area of Intelligent Telematics and a research
group inside the Department of Comunications and Information
Technologies of the University of A Coruña (UDC), Spain. The
members of TELEMATICA develop their teaching and research

5.3 Research Lines RNASA (Artificial Neural Networks and
Adaptive Systems)
RNASA is the acronym of Redes de Neuronas Artificiales y
Sistemas Adaptativos (Artificial Neural Networks and Adaptive
Systems), a research group inside the Department of Comunications and
Information Technologies and the Department of Medicine of the
University of A Coruña (UDC), Spain. The members of RNASA develop
their teaching and research activities on Artificial Intelligence, especially in the area of
connectionist systems, using Artificial Neural Networks to solving complex real-world
problems, and covering mainly the area of medicine.
The specific research lines at RNASA are:
 Artificial Intelligence using a connectionist approach to computation and
evolutionary computation.
 Telemedicine. DICOM application development, PACS systems with web
technology and interaction with the HIS/RIS. Telecare for patients, remote diagnosis,
remote education, monitoring of patients, security of medical data, and so on.
 Digital image analysis. Intelligent systems for 3D reconstruction.
 Thermal therapy. Software development and application development for
thermal therapy
RNASA is a multidisciplinary team that develops major research projects related to computing
and medicine. The Group currently is conducting numerous research projects in collaboration
with hospitals.

MADS is the acronym of Models and Applications of
Distributed Systems Group, a research group inside the

Modelling in Engineering and Applied Sciences Group)
M2NICA is the acronym of Grupo de Modelos y Métodos
Numéricos en Ingeniería y Ciencias Aplicadas (Mathematical and
Numerical Modelling in Engineering and Applied Sciences Group)
a research group framed into the Department of Mathematics (DM) and located at the
Computer Science Faculty of University of A Coruña (UDC). M2NICA group members develop
their research and transfer activities in the field of mathematical models and numerical
methods for solving real problems with industrial and commercial applications. The study
of problems ranges from the mathematical modeling of the involved processes and products,
through the mathematical analysis of the models and the design of more efficient numerical
methods for their solution to the implementation of algorithms for the simulation of the
processes with computer applications, also including the ability to use tools of high
performance computing tools, where the computational cost require.

LIDIA is the acronym of Laboratorio de Investigación y
Desarrollo en Inteligencia Artificial (Artificial Intelligence
Lab), a research group inside the Department of Computer
Science of the University of A Coruña (UDC), Spain. The
members of LIDIA develop their teaching and research activities on theoretical and applied
aspects of Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning from 1990.

IRLab is the acronym of Information Retrieval Lab, a research
group inside the Department of Computer Science of the
University of A Coruña (UDC), Spain. The members of IRLab
develop their teaching and research activities on the
development of new models and techniques to improve the
effectiveness and efficiency of information retrieval systems (web and mobile devices).
The specific research lines at IRLab are:

This technological area emphasizes the search for techniques and algorithms applied in the
recovery, management and use of information on the web and through mobile devices that
adapt to the characteristics of business information with the security and privacy restrictions
defined in the organizations or entities.

1. General projects and components on mobile devices:
 NowOnWeb: to search for news and summarization
 Lexisla: Legislative Search System (European Bulletin, BOE, DOG, Newsletters
Provincial). Lexisla is a LegalIR system that crawls, segments and index official legal
bulletins. It was developed with the support of Fundación Calidade and it is being used
by the UVTT team, currently providing up-to-date access to Boletín Oficial del Estado,
Diario Oficial de Galicia, Boletín Oficial de la Junta de Andalucía, Boletín Oficial de
Castilla Y León and Boletín Oficial del Territorio Histórico de Álava.

The system is composed by different modules such as a specific crawler, a document
analyser component, an indexer and a advanced search interface.
As commercial product Lexisla offers:
- Flexible multisource segmentation algorithm
- Efficient document analysis and processing
- Automatic content updating
- Advanced local browsing over the bulletins
- Advanced search capabilities

2. Specific projects on mobile devices
 mOCRa: mOCRa is a system that allows image capture and conversion to text by
OCR. It is therefore a productivity tool for mobile devices, including smartphones.
It is developed for devices with Android and iPhone. It has an interface that lets
you capture an image of high quality. This feature, along with the use of post-
processing techniques of the recognized text, produces nearly perfect results. The
text obtained can be edited, emailed and integrated into other productivity
applications.
More than 30,000 downloads in the Android Market.
 Voice: Developing a mobile application that works with voice synthesis and
recognition

6.2 [◄] Integration of Applications and Information
This technological area emphasizes the search for techniques and algorithms to solve the
problems of integrating data, applications and services in corporate environment as in a web
environment. Technological evolution is the common denominator in the need for application

currently being used by passengers of public transport in A Coruña. The urban bus
users get real-time information and time lines for buses as well as how to plan your
route, etc.. It also complements the functionality of a tour desk or advertising. Users
also can connect via Bluetooth or Wi-Fi on their mobile phones, smartphones and

Artificial Intelligence is one of the disciplines whose computational techniques are currently
most in demand in various environments due to its ability to provide intelligent behavior in
many applications. For example, incorporating smart agents, neural networks, expert systems,
genetic algorithms, etc.. for the optimization of production systems is an active trend in the
industrial environment of countries with high technological development and heavy
investment in research and development. These components of artificial intelligence
controlling main function independently and in coordination with other agents, such as
industrial components manufacturing cell or assembly, maintenance, diagnostic systems, etc.
Applications in the areas of Industrial, Civil and Naval Engineering, these techniques are
therefore very broad. Some applications of note are:

 MIASOFT: MIASOFT is an integrated software for intelligent monitoring Apnea
Syndrome / Hypopneas Sleep result of ten years of research, which analyzes the
signals monitored in patients undergoing nocturnal polysomnography: both signals
related to the patient's respiratory function, as those related to the patient's sleep.

In the case of signals related to respiratory function analyzes the airflow in airway
and oxygen saturation in arterial blood (SaO2) and thoracic and abdominal efforts.
This allows determining whether the patient has total respiratory interruptions
(apneas) or partial (hypopnea) and if you make efforts or not breathing. Signals
related to the patient's sleep is the electroencephalogram (EEG), the
electrooculogram (EOG) and electromyogram (EMG). The analysis of these signals
allows hypnogram build (or map the patient's sleep), that is the shortcut key to
getting a proper diagnosis.
The specific objectives of this project are:

adaptation of different technological devices to the characteristics and needs of

6.4 [◄] Network Media and Digital Home
Networked audio-visual systems defined services that allow the presentation of multimedia
content in networked heterogeneous devices, including PCs, set-top boxes, home media
centers and mobile devices connected to a network and data transmission media. The
interaction causes an evolution of the passive consumption of television to a participatory
model, ubiquitous and converged on different devices and platforms: terrestrial (DVB-T), cable
(DVB-C) or satellite (DVB-S) and which data transport using IP (IPTV, Internet TV) and mobile
television systems either broadcast (DVB-H, MBMS) or unicast (UMTS 3G). The focus on the
user opens a huge range of new systems and networked audiovisual services that will
revolutionize the way we understand the audiovisual and entertainment market.
In this technological area the R & D actions are carried out oriented software systems and
services across the value chain of interactive digital television, from:
 Header services associated with the transmission of digital video (on demand
planning and dissemination of content, coding and content adaptation, etc..) Or the
integration of information systems (electronic guide service, customer backend
applications, payment gateways , etc.).
 Software systems and user terminals in the connected home, from platforms to
develop interactive services (MHP, OpenTV, etc..), Middleware control set-top boxes,
systems and technology in media players (codecs, interfaces user, DRM, etc..), use and
development of interactive services (shuttles, EPG, interactive advertising, etc..) with
special attention to the t-administration, t-and t-commerce training
 Systems for the production, indexing and archiving of audiovisual content (content
management systems, indexing, annotation and search digital video processing, etc..).
Experience in mobile application development today is focused on Android and iPhone OS
(iPhone, iPad).

1. General projects:
 Syntheractive: The project aims to design and build a prototype of a distributed
system capable of generating synthetic video and encode it in real time, using the
computing power of graphics processors (GPU) optimizations of consumption and the
movement of information between CPU and graphics processor to serve as basic
infrastructure for the definition of mass interactive services for digital television.
This project led to the creation of a spin-off of the CITIC Center called
http://www.syntheractive.com/
 DHHD (Digital Home High Definition): This project aims to build a pilot
digital home as a case study to assess, analyze and draw conclusions about the
challenges of the jump from standard definition (SD) to high definition (HD) in each
link value chain of interactive digital television, from acquisition and content
production, distribution on the transport network (IPTV, DVB-T, DVB-C) and
consumption of user terminals.
 OptiBand: Optimizing bandwidth for streaming video over IPTV networks. Project
under the 7th EU Framework Programme.
OptiBand will overcome the bottleneck of bandwidth that has created the DSL access
network. This bottleneck does not currently allow for the adequate provision of
customized video content to high definition for the subscriber.

OptiBand focused on optimizing the bandwidth of IPTV for the delivery of multiple HD
streams over a single ADSL line, and by that enabling multiple HD channels per
household. OptiBand has conducted in-depth research and development regarding the
efficient distribution of video content using smart data drop algorithm within the
telecommunication aggregation networks, while preserving quality of experience
according to both objective and subjective metrics.

6.5 [◄] Usability and Validation Methods
Development of new methodologies, tools, techniques and studies for the validation and
analysis of usability of computer systems and their application to various fields.
The technology area is focused on, first develop a line of theoretical research in the field of
usability and on the other hand, developing techniques and tools to apply theoretical research
to real problems for usability findings on computer systems.
Within the theoretical research line, are found tasks such as the definition of usability and
context of use and the development of a taxonomy to characterize those elements and
attributes that make them up. It also includes a classification of different applications or
systems, the different techniques of usability testing and the development of a methodology
of analysis that interrelates these elements.
Within the research practice line, are included the development of tools and techniques to
automate most repetitive tasks including analysis of usability. Trying to not only present the
results but analyze and criticize indicating strengths and weaknesses in terms of usability.
As regards the systems that are under study in this line, it is generally intended that everything
can be done that could be applied to any product or service, but in particular will place special
emphasis on applications. For example, try to analyze systems and desktop applications, web
applications, embedded systems, etc..
 UV1: Development of methodologies, techniques and analysis tools for usability and
accessibility of websites and web applications II. Specific projects on mobile devices
 Visnu: Analysis of the usability of software and electronics. It is based on a taxonomy
of its own. Application:
o Web Environments to the comprehensive analysis of navigation on a particular
website.
o mobile environments for analysis of the use of devices and applications on mobile
devices (smartphones, tablets, PDAs, ...)

 UV2: Development of methodologies, techniques and analysis tools usability of
applications on mobile devices and the devices themselves.
 CARAT-Counter: Software that calculates a score relating to how the driver is
complying with speed limits. Application on a mobile device to a vehicle

6.6 [◄] Digital Image Processing
The digital image processing can be defined as the set of procedures for handling and
analyzing information in a digital image through a computer. This is an extremely large area,
which encompasses many methodologies to improve the quality of the image and analyze its
content and applies to areas as diverse as biology, medicine, defense, industrial automation,
document analysis, information retrieval, engineering civil, etc.
Digital image processing is a very large area, both proposed methodologies and in their
practical applications. We will focus on the detailed definition of the objectives capable of
monitoring and those in it have proven experience.
• Ophthalmological Image Processing: Digital image processing provides an invaluable aid in
medical image processing, both in automating tedious processes such as decision support.
Among the eye images currently used by ophthalmologists are the angiograms, the fundus
images or, more recently, OCT. Specifically, ophthalmological image analysis allows the
detection of the ocular structures, the automatic measurement of characteristics and the
detection of anomalies.
• Optical images Processing: the images are photographs of the eye used by optometrists to
measure characteristics such as tear film thickness or the amount of red in the eye, and
diagnosis of diseases. These are complex images on which not relevant structures appear, such
as eyelashes or eyelids, which should be isolated so as not to influence subsequent processing.
• Biometrics and people characterization: it is an applied research field is booming due to the
increasing demand to implement security systems in both the private and public campuses. It
includes a set of techniques whose objectives are to identify an individual from a group of
people or verify their identity. This is done using techniques as diverse as fingerprint
recognition, retina, iris, face, voice, gestures, writing, hand geometry, etc..
• Civil engineering: is a field of applied research in developing new measurement techniques,
detection, feature extraction and image instrumentation, allowing a better modeling of trials
in the field of civil engineering experimentation. Some application areas are: construction
engineering, hydraulics, hydrology and ports and coasts.

 SIRIUS: Retina’s image analysis; Automatic computer system for the study of
hypertensive retinal microcirculation. Development of a web application for
centralized management of patients.
The retina is the only part of the body where the vascular structure and blood flow is
observed in vivo. Medical studies have established the relationship between retinal
microcirculation and other general diseases like hypertension, diabetes or
Alzheimer's. Specifically, the arterio-venous ratio, ie the ratio between the size of
veins and arteries in the retina, is an indicator often used as a prognostic value in the
medical field. The objective of this project is to develop a web application for
centralized management of patients that incorporates a tool for automatic calculation
of the index from arterio venous fundus images following established protocols in the
literature. From a color fundus, the application addresses the automatic detection of
trace optical disc and a set of concentric circles that structure. Then extracted vessel
segments that intersect the circumferences of interest and measuring their size.
Furthermore, loss of vessel segments is classified into artery or vein by color intensity,
as well as medical experts. Finally, it calculates the arteriovenous index according to
different mathematical methods. The web application will monitor the status of
patients and also provide a centralized environment that will enable the medical
studies involving different hospitals.
 SEDAM: Automatic Detection Expert System Macular Area. Development of a tool to
extract the macula of the human eye automatically from retinal for further analysis.
Analysis of pathologies in the image generated near the macula.
The macula or fovea is the area of the retina where the greatest number of
photoreceptors and, therefore, where visual acuity is greater. In the images or retinal
fundus appears as a circular area near the optic nerve and a darker color. The presence
of ocular pathologies near the macula, such as bleeding or Druze, poses a risk for
vision. This project addresses the task of developing an automated tool that allows to
extract automatically the macula from retinal for further analysis.
The localization process of the macula is based on studies on the shape and
arrangement of the ocular structures. First, we analyze the arterio-venous vascular
tree and determine which are the main vessels (vessels thicker) appearing on the

retina. Below, these main vessels fit a polynomial model and determining the area of
interest to the location of the optic disc. Once located, segmented optic disc, fit the
main vessels and the optic disc to a parabolic model. This model allows for an area of
interest for the location of the macula. Finally, it is extracted by using the macula
correlation filters.
 Human behavior analysis: New research focused in human behavior analysis in
video sequences with multiple targets. A robust tracking system is needed to perform
the analysis. Two issues have to be solved: target collisions and occlusions. A collision
occurs when two or more targets interact within the scene. The system have to control
this situations, in order to avoid possible exchange of identifiers. We have developed a
full multiple-target tracking system that can deal with people collisions and occlusions.
The system is also able to be trained to detect other objects of interest.
We are currently working on the target
path detection and characterization. The
system includes a module for abnormal
behavior detection that can work with or
without any a priori information about the
environment. A module of detection of
usual paths, including frequency
information, is also developed.

6.7 [◄] Wireless Communications Systems
The objective of this technological area is the development of technologies, applications and
data transmission services through wireless media. It covers a wide spectrum of topics ranging
from the most theoretical signal processing and communications, to the more practical
implementation of new wireless services, through prototyping communications terminal
equipment.
Undoubtedly, wireless communications are today the most dynamic and fastest growing in the
ICT Technologies of Information and Communications Technology (ICT). Proof of this is the
enormous economic and social impacts that have led to technologies such as mobile telephony
(GSM, 3G, LTE ...), the wireless Internet access (WiFi, WiMAX ...) systems, wireless connection
of peripherals (Bluetooth, Ultrawideband, ...) or wireless sensor networks.
However, despite impressive advances in recent years, still need to work on new technologies
capable of improving the performance of wireless networks in terms of transmission speed,
delay, expense, cost and coverage so we can address successfully the formidable challenges
posed by emerging applications
In this sense the working lines of the present technological area are:
 Iterative techniques and adaptive signal processing for estimation, synchronization
and interference cancellation in wireless communications. Transmission systems with
multi-antenna technologies (MIMO).
 Construction of testbeds for the evaluation of wireless transmission schemes.
 Prototyping of wireless communications terminal equipment using technologies SDR
(Software Defined Radio).
 Technologies RFID (Radio Frequency Identification).
 Wireless networks of sensors and information systems context.
 Wireless communications between vehicles.
 GNU Radio Technologies.
 Positioning systems and indoor location.

 BIGPeel, Dixital Peel Building: Designing a system for early detection of diseases of
the building based on intelligent sensor networks.
The project's main objective is the design, evaluation of the robustness and efficiency
of a system for early detection of pathologies in the construction, using intelligent
sensor networks. Among the stated requirements is the need for a low power enabling
it to work longer without recharging the system batteries.
With this system it is possible to analyze the behavior of structures (buildings,
bridges,dams, ...) with the passage of time or after a traumatic event (eg an
earthquake)
 GNUTEST: Experimental Platform Based on GNU Radio Communication Systems and
Location. The goal of this project is the development of an SDR architecture based on
GNU Radio, to develop a series of experimental platforms. The experimental platforms
will serve as a means of assessing: physical layer of a narrowband standard such as
WiMAX/LTE and positioning/locating techniques based on ad-hoc systems.
 Mowi: Design, Development and Improvement of Mobile WiMAX interface. Air
interface for military tactical communications and broadband wireless.
The objective of this project is the design and implementation of an air interface for
wireless tactical communications and broadband based on WiMAX, taking as its
starting point the physical layer specification of the Mobile WiMAX standard (IEEE
802.16e-2005).
This project will make changes to this physical layer to cover the requirements
identified for a hostile environment communications. As a result, you get up the
communications system of the physical layer, MAC layer implementing tailored to a
tactical scenario. The specific objectives pursued by the project are:
o Theoretical analysis: We performed a detailed analysis of the MAC layer
communication standard IEEE 802.16e-2005 and the network architecture
proposed by the WiMAX Forum.

o Implementation with RDS: Using a platform of Software Defined Radio (SDR),
developed by the research group, was achieved implementation of
reconfigurable and reprogrammable DSP / FPGA of that platform.
 SMARTEPIS: Workplace Safety and Control Personal Protective Equipment (PPE).
Based on technologies WBAN (Wireless Body Area Network), RFID and mesh networks.
The importance of safety in the workplace has increased dramatically in recent years.
Thus, both authorities and organizations have been concerned to establish security
policies both at work.
The SMART-project EPIS actively sought to prevent workplace accidents with the
correct use of PPE (Personal Protective Equipment) at construction sites. That is why
this project concerns the construction of a wireless sensor network capable of
detecting use of protective devices by workers and store that information in order to
carry out more checks on workers in a more efficient, convenient, effective and with
less expense of contracting services for the prevention of occupational risks (often
outside the company).
We used a ZigBee mesh network, consisting of nodes that will become one of the
workers. Each of these nodes was composed of a microcontroller board based on Free
Hardware Arduino project (Open Source Hardware, OSHW), along with a number of
readers that enable RFID (Radio Frequency Identification, RFID) and a radio module
XBee. To develop the communication protocol between nodes via XBee library will be
used open-source for Arduino XBee API, implemented in C++. The GUI of the
application coordinator and will manage the database against which act the wireless
sensor network will be developed as a desktop application using Java Swing and open-
source library for Java API XBee

2. Projects with components on mobile devices
 MISCOM: Smart Marketing in Commercial Areas. Location techniques and
technologies for indoor environments. Smart business techniques based on human
behavior and Web-oriented technologies (WOA).
The project Platform Marketing Advanced Intelligent Surfaces Commercial MISCOM,
innovative technology provide a solution under the Future Internet paradigm, based
on the latest technologies for indoor location with advanced techniques of human
behavior patterns and Web-oriented architectures (WOA) to help these companies
improve their customer relationships by offering a more personalized and therefore
more competitive.
The project stems from the need to differentiate sector and improve its
competitiveness through smart marketing techniques and offer more personalized
service, and has as main goal the development of an Advanced Intelligent Marketing
platform applicable to improving the customer shopping experience and design
marketing strategies that take into account the buying patterns and other data of
interest. The platform technology pillars are MISCOM localization techniques and
technologies for indoor environments, smart business techniques based on human
behavior and Web-oriented technologies (WOA), which will enable the development
of applications such as customer behavior analysis or knowledge of patterns of travel
for the redesign of layouts. It will also be possible to measure the current and
historical behavior: No customer visit time slot, by area ... and establish customer
service based on location. Examples of such services would be a browser smart
shopping carts to facilitate the visit with information on the amount of the purchase,
daily specials, automatic generation of a list / purchase path based on consumer
habits, confirmation of the list final procurement and electronic payment
authorization thereof, etc.
 Smard: Software remote monitoring and alerting for dependents.
 Real-Time Location Sistem (RTLS) indoor: System for indoor location on
Android. GPRS API, API Sensor API WiFi, Bluetooth API and open source.
 WICROPS (Wireless Internet of CROPS): The project addresses WICROPS
design and development of innovative telemetry solutions based on Internet concepts
and Web of Things, as a facilitating tool for precision farming techniques in farms in
regions typically smallholders (SMEs and micro), contributing to the development of

sustainable agriculture. Using technologies WSN
(Wireless Sensor Networks) to support IP
architectures WOA (Web Oriented Architecture) and
GIS data will be possible for the evolution of critical
parameters of the operation are available at all times
(real time), place (remotely via Internet) and through
any device (PDA, mobile, PC ...), all with minimal impact, low power and low cost
(compared to other wireless technologies like GPRS), so the manager can make
decisions time, thus obtaining a double benefit: economic and environmental.
The project will enable agricultural SMEs with limited resources to manage the
evolution of their crops through simple Web tools, helping and encouraging the
development process and implementation of ICT in business and the inclusion of more
and more entities in the Information Society. In fact, the project scope includes
validation on farms of Galicia and Asturias, and technology transfer to industry.
WICROPS not only serve as a means to provide tools to individually agricultural SMEs
but on the contrary, is intended to their potential use collectively.
The development paradigm based on the "Internet of things" and "WOA service
architectures" will make possible and facilitate the flow of information and access to
two-way, through Internet, so that the system itself can feed data External and
services of interest, and at the same time, the culture data may be integrated into
external databases available to different agents related to agricultural production
(regional governments, local, national, consulting firms, cooperatives ...).
 ZIGSEA: Wireless Sensor Network Modeling by ZigBee technology for environmental
monitoring in coastal areas and rivers.
The ZIGSEA project sought to obtain wireless sensor networks models applicable to
environmental monitoring based on emerging technologies such as ZigBee, with the
aim of acquiring new knowledge for the design and development of equipment and
telemetry and remote control solutions for efficient and competitive. The work
seemed completed analysis of the adequacy of Mobile WiMAX technology to the
design of wireless sensor networks, in order to bridge longer distances. This is claimed

to be able to design new solutions based on these technologies, thus anticipating the
demand of potential clients.
The ZIGSEA project consisted in the design of wireless sensor networks for
environmental monitoring applicable to the design and development of equipment
and solutions for telemetry and telecontrol efficient and competitive, transmitting
values to a data collection center for alerting prediction.
 SeaMAX: Evaluation of Mobile WiMAX systems in coastal environments through
field testing and channel emulator.
One of the latest demands of the maritime sector is the need for broadband
communications reliable, robust and economically competitive. Traditional
technologies that use the HF bands present problems
related to the limited bandwidth, while the cellular mobile
access technologies 2G and 3G are not sufficient to meet
current needs in these scenarios, mainly due to high
latency in connections and limitations on coverage
distances. Other access technologies such as VSAT, have
severe limitations associated with the high cost of equipment and maintenance of the
service, the difficulty of aiming the antennas in the marine boundary and the
asymmetric nature of teleconferencing.
This project proposes as an alternative to address these deficiencies in developing
solutions around WiMAX access technology. The major communications equipment
manufacturers are betting OFDM design equipment for home use indoor / outdoor,
ignoring its implementation in professional circles as the sea, where a large number of
customers (security services, pleasure boats and fishing, sensors, telemetry, industrial
marine, etc ...).

This project evaluates the functioning and performance of mobile systems based on
IEEE 802.16e (Mobile WiMAX) in coastal maritime boundaries. This is achieved through
the shipping channel emulator that allows real-time testing WiMAX terminal
equipment in a laboratory without the need for costly deployments in a real
scenario.In addition to improving existing telecontrol systems, telemetry and
command, the project will contribute to the revitalization of the communications
sector professionals (customs surveillance, control port, maritime rescue teams, etc
...), and act as a tractor for the establishment new business opportunities for wireless
operators specializing in coverage of coastal areas (tourism, nautical events, security,
etc ...) and continental shelf (fishing).
 TECOMVEH: Technologies of Mobility and Vehicular Communications.
TECOMVEH studying networks and service platforms in
the environment of road transport, with the aim of
reducing road accidents and up to 50% by 2010. For
this, the research focuses on three main levels: basic technology, engineering and
service on the experimental scenarios that validate the developments made.
The TECOMVEH project aims to contribute to research into new communications
systems and services based on mobile communications and vehicular environments, in
line with the work being carried out at European level (Car2Car) and USA (V2V).
Following these guidelines TECOMVEH concentrated on aspects of nomadic
technologies at high speeds, Zigbee, WiFi and WiMAX Mobile, roaming between
networks using low interconnection protocols, hardware and Mobile WiMAX Spanish,
which was developed in the project scope.
ICT is a great opportunity to provide solutions that help preserve road safety. Different
studies claim that the intelligent road safety systems to reduce the proportion of car
accidents due to human error by 95%.TECOMVEH aims to investigate the provision of
services in vehicular environments through available networks in a heterogeneous,
making optimal use of them and getting the provision of mobile services. To do this,
try different access technologies as cellular, WiFi and WiMAX, as well as provision of
mobile services such as vehicle monitoring signals.
To finish the project, will be demonstrated to verify the technical feasibility of these
systems and communications vehicle for unmanned traffic management, and so certify
that the new systems are within the European objectives of the Framework
Programme. As a novelty, TECOMVEH wants to encourage online communication, and
for that its participants have a website where projects will be hanging for sharing and
where they can improve the work

The Web information systems are useful in a number of areas. This Technological Area is
specialized in the use of Web information systems for building digital libraries, e-Government
applications, e-commerce applications. Among its applications may include the following:
 Management systems with applications in multiple areas: territory, logistics, ...
 Web and e-commerce portals.
 Document management, digital libraries, newspaper libraries, documentation centers
 Digital content. Solutions not only PCs but also for devices.
The increase in available bandwidth Internet connections, and the inclusion of new
technologies in web browsers, has allowed leaving the traditional information systems built
with desktop applications to pass information systems based on web applications running and
displayed on a web server. Clear examples of these applications are initiatives such as Google
Apps (Docs, Sites, Calendar, etc...), Applications like social networks, Flickr, etc.. Today, the
best way to deploy a client-server in an organization or the general public is through a web
application.
However, the development of a Web information system requires knowledge and control of a
large number of techniques and technologies: from technologies for the rapid construction of
Web information systems to techniques for designing user interfaces agile, flexible and
accessible. Learn to use these techniques and technologies are a key success factor for any
company in the sector.

driven to a different profile and functions within the center.
o Schedule-SIXA, is designed so that schools can send XadeWeb schedules
created by Kronowin or Peñalara, avoiding the tedious task of manually enter.
o SIXA-SMS facilitates the sending of SMS both the families of students at the
school as teachers. The system communicates with XadeWeb to obtain the
data center's students and their families as well as the lack of assistance; the
application is also able to send via SMS.

6.9 [◄] Geographic Information Systems (GIS)
Geographic information systems are large software systems that store information in an
integrated alphanumeric and geographic giving them great potential for development of
applications in very different areas. Thus, this type of computer systems by providing data on
the territory associated with the mapping of it, are an ideal infrastructure for a wide range of
applications of great interest and valuable to both the government and for different types of
businesses. For example, from cadastral management to urban planning, through land
consolidation, these systems provide not only the different public administrations to improve
their internal processes but also to the public to convey this information in a very simple Web
posting.
On the other hand a wide range of companies can benefit from the technology of geographic
information systems as this is useful not only for companies directly related to the work in the
territory (surveying and engineering firms) but also companies with fleets of cars or trucks with
routes to be optimized as the geographic information system can be implemented route
optimization algorithms, calculation of travel times, etc..
The technological characteristics of the research are:

The LBD team participated in the development of geographic information tool gisEIEL
application that allows managing all the information that is collected and is currently
being used in three Galician provinces and three in the rest of Spain .
o It has advanced tools for digitizing / editing to enable the maintenance of
geographic databases. • Includes tools for spatial analysis.
o Provides access to OGC services (WMS, WFS, WCS).
o Enables the generation of maps and reports in a simple

Tool that provides all the functionality necessary for data management and reporting:
o Automatic import of parcel information, headlines, and the scope of the proposed
expropriation.
o Automatic calculation with GIS technology, parcels, and property owners affected
by a particular field of expropriation.
o Generation of chips, maps and reports of the management process of
expropriation.
2. Projects with components on mobile devices
 Around me: Platform for the promotion of tourist service companies in integrating
natural and cultural environment in which they are using technology of geographic
information systems. This makes it possible to get what elements of natural and cultural
interest are in the vicinity of a particular tourist accommodation or tourist facilities which
are located within 2 miles of beach and near a main road.

 MeteoSIX mobile: georeferenced weather information
The mobile application is available MeteoSIX project to Android OS devices and, since July
25, 2012, also for IOS (iPhone and iPod Touch natively, and iPhone compatibility mode).
Allows users to view weather and oceanographic prediction provided by numerical
prediction models run by MeteoGalicia.
The mobile application allows for the prediction MeteoSIX for any point of Galicia and its
coast in three ways:
o Using the device's current position
o Selecting the point of interest on the map
o Doing a search by the name of the place. Currently you can search for people and
institutions beaches.
Also the application allows you to save favorite places, and thus access to his prediction
directly. In addition, users can choose to view the forecast for each hour or a shortened
version, and can select a large number of variables: temperature, sky condition, wind

The work in this area is the analysis, modelling, development, validation, verification and
performance evaluation of systems consisting of distributed software agents logically or
physically on a computer network.
This technological area pursued the analysis, modelling, development, validation, verification
and performance evaluation of systems consisting of distributed software agents logically or
physically on a computer network.
In recent years, the importance of distributed applications and network services has become
increasingly important to the point that today does not mean an application as an entity
isolated from the rest of the world. The competition inherent in such systems complicates
development and correction.
The need to address two conflicting challenges: (a) improving software quality, in terms of
availability and performance and (b) reducing costs throughout the development life cycle
(make reliable software cheaper and more reliable cheap software) and, in particular, reduced
time-to-market of new network services encourages the R & D effort to achieve methods,
techniques and tools that enable these challenges.
One of the objectives of the telecommunications industry is the deployment of service-
oriented networks to a level of 5 nines availability (99.999%), but the development and
subsequent validation of these complex concurrent and distributed systems is extremely
difficult and costly.
Among the differential lines in the technological area include:
 Use of distributed functional paradigm for building executable models and the latest
implementation of highly available services.
 Identification of design patterns and reusable components to standardize solutions to
recurring problems in the various stages of development.
 Use of formal methods in a pragmatic way in the software life cycle, for example to
automatically validate or certify the system's behaviour based on formally specified
properties on it.
The technological area is interested in both the physical models and architectures that support
these concurrent and distributed systems (computer network, computer cluster, multi-core

systems, etc..) And various logic models to define service-oriented architectures (client / server
P2P, cloud computing, etc..).

6.11 [◄] Advanced Visualization
The Advanced Visualization for computer allows digitally recreate situations and real-world
objects, giving them associating behavior and to present information in a visual and interactive
for the user. This area is centered around the science of Computer Graphics Area thrives on a
range of technologies, including: Real-time visualization, simulation. Virtual and Augmented
Reality, Virtual Worlds. Gigapixel Image, Video 360, rendering engine development and
algorithmic computer graphics. Design interfaces, displays, interactive installations, natural
interaction.
The Advanced Visualization is one of the most common ICT and transverse character. Its
application covers all areas of the industry, from the building to audiovisual content, to
military simulation, archeology or biomedical sciences. The universal need to visualize the
process and results therefore become a technology in great demand.
CITIC has several research groups working in this field, in areas such as software development
for video on demand, the industrial simulation, virtual reconstruction of the historical, the
visualization of construction projects, the three-dimensional representation of the territory,
development of Virtual Reality systems and the design of man-machine interfaces based on
image analysis, among other projects of direct application of computer graphics technology
that required visual support for implementation and presentation of results.

Research
The objective of this research area are nonparametric inference, game theory and applications
of Statistics and Operations Research in general. Another of the goals is to develop and
transfer research activities in the field of mathematical models and numerical methods for
solving real problems and industrial and commercial applications. The study of problems
ranging from mathematical modeling of processes and products, through mathematical
analysis thereof and the design of more efficient numerical methods for resolution, until the
implementation of computer algorithms for simulation of processes with computer
applications, with the possibility of using computational tools high performance when the
required computational cost.

7. Facilities
The CITIC has two modular and intelligent buildings with an area of 3.200m2 where businesses
are located, researchers and collaborators. The different research groups are distributed in
open spaces. Researchers have meeting rooms of different features, equipped with audiovisual
equipment (projector, whiteboard, whiteboard), which are used by a reservation system
through the intranet of CITIC. Some of these rooms, at present, are usually reserved for the
implementation of demonstration projects as a showroom.
CITIC also features:

Updated and heterogeneous equipment on which tests are
performed, pilots, demonstrations and pre-commercial
deployments.. Compares and debug features, determine the
impact by adding new features, load testing and evaluating
performance of systems in different hardware and software configurations.
 Digital Video Laboratory
Professional equipment throughout the audiovisual chain which
allows the acquisition, distribution and consumption in different
scenarios of interactive digital television (DVB-T, DVB-C, IPTV, DVB-H).
 Broadcast station TDT (DVB-T, DVB-H)
Facility for issuing experimental content and services (DVB-T) and
mobile TV (DVB-H) for R & D projects related to interactive digital TV.
 Living Lab
The living lab recreates a modern apartment connected
through different access technologies (VDSL, cable and fiber to
the home). It displays real scenarios validate technology in the
home with the check on the usability of end technology
products and services developed.

8. References
As Research Center of the ICT sector, the CITIC works to boost the synergy of Science-
Technology and as a meeting point projecting University-Industry R & D to the business area
through the Technology Transfer. Due to the nature of the research groups that make up the
CITIC, selected through competitive grant programs among those with a greater potential for
technology transfer within the ICT University of A Coruña, collaborations with industrial fabric
