MOOC OVERVIEW
This MOOC is based on the Science of Nuclear energy. It aims to reduce carbon
emissions around the world and that Nuclear energy may be used to reduce carbon
emissions around the world. It is a Network Based MOOC. This MMOC is ran by Sam
Smidt and Gemma Warriner. The duration of this MOOC is four weeks. The topic of
this MOOC is ‘The Science of Nuclear Energy’. In this MOOC The course does not
assume any prior knowledge of nuclear energy and can be enjoyed by anyone
interested in science and becoming more informed of energy choices.

REASONS FOR SELECTING THIS MOOC
I am a science prospective teacher. I chose this MOOC because is based on science.
This MOOC is related to my field in education. This MOOC will help me when I will
be teaching the learners a topic “Electricity and Magnetism”. I may use this MOOC to
do a research project whose topic is ‘Nuclear energy can be used as an alternative
resource of energy in South Africa” with the learners in Physical sciences. This MOOC
will help me in identifying and addressing the misconceptions that learners have about
Nuclear energy. Additionally, I will be confident when I will be teaching Nuclear power
energy in Natural sciences since I will be having the background knowledge about
Nuclear power energy from this MOOC. This MOOC will assist me to do Nuclear
energy investigations with the learners in Natural sciences as well as in Physical
sciences. Seemingly, this MOOC is informative about Nuclear power energy. Thus,
it informed me that Nuclear power energy may be used to reduce carbon emissions
around the world. Again, Nuclear power energy may be used in South Africa since
coal may be finished in 2050. Thus, knowing about Nuclear power as a prospective
science teacher is important because I will also assist learners who want to become
scientists in Nuclear energy when I will be teaching. Moreover, I will know better how
to teach the learners the advantages (positive effects) of Nuclear power as well as
the disadvantages (negative effects) of Nuclear power energy. For instance, on one
hand, nuclear power help to fight climate change. On the other hand, radioactive
waste: the waste produced by nuclear reactors needs to be disposed off at a safe
place since they are extremely hazardous (dangerous) and can leak radiations if not
stored properly. Unfortunately, this may result in death of human beings and animals
(as well as plants). Hence, this will prepare the learners in order for them to be ready
for the energy changes in future. This MOOC to me is a hobby.
EXPECTATIONS
I am expecting this MOOC to enrich my knowledge about Nuclear power energy.
Similarly, this MOOC will inform me more about Nuclear power energy. I am expecting
this MOOC to convince me that Nuclear Energy may be used as an alternative
resource to generate electricity in South Africa and in other countries as well as in
other continents. Furthermore, I am expecting this MOOC to prepare me to be an
excellent teacher of Nuclear power energy. This MOOC will be very informative to me.

It will provide me with technological skills for completing (doing) science online
activities. Additionally, it will prepare me on how to effectively plan lessons based
on Nuclear power energy when I will be teaching Natural sciences and Physical
sciences. I am expecting this MOOC to show me some of the misconceptions that
Nuclear energy scientists have identified. Moreover, I am expecting this MOOC to
show me some of the most dangerous impacts that the generation of Nuclear power
may have in the world. I am expecting this MOOC to help me in advising people in
careers that are based on Nuclear power energy.
INTRODUCTION TO MOOC COMMUNITY
I am Mphafudi K.C, currently a student at the University of Johannesburg (South
Africa). I am studying Bachelor of Education (senior and FET phase), and am also
a tutor (mentor) in science department. I specialize in Physical sciences, Life
sciences (Biology) and Natural sciences. Moreover, I like teaching learners and
students. My academic goal is to be a science agent of change in the lives of many
learners and students. Thus, I want to turn the eyes of the people from dark (e.g.
failures) to light (success). Basically, I really adore God. I am defined by the phrase
“Real Scriptural Christianity”.
