Social Media
Social media is such a brad topic. Each side has very reason arguments. In this paper one
will read how social media is hurting society by telling you the key issues of this reading, the
benefits of social media, and the concerns of social median, and how social media has effected
the democratic societies.
In many ways social media affects us in such a negative way. Some key issues of this are,
most use social media to hide, not meet others (Clemmitt). Many people claim to get on the
internet to meet other, which in fact, is the exact opposite. Sports median and different
entertainment TV shows are now what (Clemmitt) calls “dominating the Twitter world. The TV
show called “Castle in the Sky” was raving on twitter, in fact it got 25,088 tweets per second.
Madonna’s half time performance got twitter excited too. It got 10,245 tweets per second. There
is information getting out there, but what they say is everything you see on the internet is not
true. According to (Clemmitt) many kids say they prefer not to talk face to face. Teens are
showing a decrease in risk taking (Clemmitt). What this means is, we are so caught up in social
media we are forgetting how the real world works. If you take technology from anyone you will
lose their attention in minutes (Clemmitt). The can barley go 10 minutes without checking their
phones (Clemmitt). Thirty-four percent of people post their own political or social commentary
on twitter (Clemmitt). The erosion of privacy due to the fact of social media gets bigger and
bigger each day(Clemmitt). Internet users are not aware of the fact how aggressive companies
2. can be about you clicking on their ad. These are all key issues of concern in the reading.
Concerned due to the fact that kids are not showing their own opinion, due to all of the harsh
comments you get from people.
There is a bountiful number of benefits due to social media. Sixty-five percent of Twitter/
social media users learn more about products and services compared to the time they did not
have social media. “Facebook is like a great party where you can hangout with your friends.”
Said by Clemmitt. You are always connected with your friends. There is always something new
on the internet, always something new to engage in and chat with your friends about. That is why
I think they called it a party is due to the fact that you are never really alone, social media is
always connecting you to something. Social media is one of the most improved ways od
socialization. If one is out and about somewhere you could instantly go meet someone because
they tweeted you because they wanted to hangout.
There are very legitimate concerns about social media. To start off, It makes personal
relationships more difficult (Clemmitt). People do not feel the need to met in person when they
could say what they need to over any social media sites. Humans rely solely on their phones.
You will lose a persona attention within minutes after talking their phones away. Online ads
attack users because of what they have bought in the past. Social media has started a
“participatory culture” from the internet (Clemmitt). If you do not have any kinds of social media
then you are considered to be “out of the loop” That is how everyone finds out about all different
event happening around them. You are not considered to be “cool” if you do not have social
media. This causes other to judge one another. If you are not participating with what everyone
else is doing, you will get left behind. Kids are scared to talk face to face anymore. They prefer
not to (Clemmitt). “You are constantly interrupted; you are self interrupting” (Clemmitt). You
3. can only get 15 minutes of research done at home without getting distracted by any of ones
internet devices. (Clemmitt). It can cause stress, worrying so much about others lives, and what
they are doing can cause stress and anxiety on others(Clemmitt) There are many concerns about
social media and how it is affecting society or not.
Social media has democratic societies by actually talking about the issues. Thirty – five
percent of social media is encouraging people to vote. Voting a a huge issue, It affects every
American. It is very important to vote, and that is what social media is trying to explain while
encouraging people to vote. Thirty-eight percent “like” or promote material on social or political
issues (Clemmitt). All of the material you see on social media about political and social issues is
not always true. It encourages kids to research for themselves. Thirty-Four percent post their own
social or political commentary (Clemmitt). Thirty-three percent repost stuff on social or political
issues. The downfall to all of this advertisement of politics is nobody will ever have a straight
opinion because of all the lies and bribes that come out of politics. The internet is a very
opinionated place. This causes a plethora of arguments on social media and the internet because
of false information the public has been receiving from social media and the inter net. During
campaigns, they send ads to people who access to a smart phone or tablet or computer. The only
send very negative ads to very carefully chosen users (Clemmitt). Some say ads will not affect
them, an ad will not turn anyone into a republican or democrat (Clemmitt). This is how scandals
start, all someone has to do is name a celebrity or politician and they will believe the first
negative comment that comes out of one’s mouth. People thrive on those situations. That is how
social media affects the democratic societies. Social media has a major influence on Politician
and social views of many as you can tell. Some are positive, other the other hand some are
negative. That is just the way it goes.
4. Social media affects you in a negative way. It is getting in the way of people and their
privacy. There is an abundance of people sharing information on social networking sites
(Clemmitt). You can never have a different image for your co workers or friends again, all they
have to do is look you up on the internet (Clemmitt). Fewer and fewer people limit their
information on social media (Clemmitt).
Social Media is taking away from things such as newspapers and magazines (Internet and
social media). Not only those but TV rating have dropped, If we are losing business from people
that we cant even air TV then there is something wrong (Internet and social Media). The more
internet users expand their verity of searches, is when they get hacked. Eighty-One percent of
parents are concerned because the internet can pick out things their kids like just by them using
the internet (Internet and Social Media). There is tons of plagiarism going on now that everyone
is using the internet. People do not know they have to cite their sources or use a credible source
(Internet and social media).
When one has a question, fifty-eight percent of people use the inter net (Clemmitt). While
using the internet half of the people do not check their sources (Clemmitt). If you’re looking up
information wouldn’t one want to be giving out the correct information? “They always find what
they’re searching for, it might not be the best thing, but they found something” (Clemmitt). That
is most American attitude towards the internet.
